Hey,

So first off I'm turnover tax registered and have been for quite a few years.

End of last year I had a weird issue where SARS randomly sent one of my turnover tax forms back to me with the notice that they "only accept original documents" (it was). For reference sake, these forms are submitted twice per year together with making a payment just like with provisional tax.
A few months ago I visited SARS office here in PE and submitted it again personally, I also submitted 2 more, one of which was somewhat overdue (cos I was lazy). Anyways, that was all fine.

Now today I get all three back in the mail with a notice that says:

Dear taxpayer,

Unsolicited relevant material submitted.

SARS thanks you for submitting relevant material.

However, SARS only requires relevant material in specific cases and you will be informed if needed.

Please find enclosed relevant material that you have submitted. All original relevant material should be retained by you for a period of 5 years from the date of submission of the return.

I don't speak SARS so I'm pretty confused about what this actually means and what they want from me? Bear in mind I did not post these forms to SARS I handed them in personally, although I was told they would forward them to Pretoria as the PE office doesn't handle turnover tax directly.

Yeah self explanatory but why don’t you do efiling?

i dont think its hard to understand?

Hmm.. So what does it mean then? The forms they returned to me are the ones I'm obliged to submit as a turnover tax payer. I don't understand how that can be unsolicited.

I don't do efiling because turnover tax is not supported on efiling.

they are literally saying they don't want those ones they sent you back in future, they will ask for them if required.

SARS seems to say that they do not want those forms, they are relavent however, and thanks you for it.
They omit to say you should not send it unless they ask.
Sars consists of a few layers thats suppose to be digitally, verbally interlinked, but as we have seen in the past missing links can cause confusion, so you will battle a bit to get a definate answer from the physical visted centre, or the phone in call centre, or from E-Filing communication, simply because you cannot directly communicate with SARS Backbone knowledgebles that has an oversite of all happenings and possibilities. If theres a fault they should be able to see it, if you can find them and make them attend to the confusion. They maybe able to fix it quickly, or need another costly update/upgrade to do it.

Yea, but these are pretty much the only forms I have to submit, biannually make a payment and submit the form which has the payment reference and stuff on it, if I don't submit these forms then I just make a payment twice per year and they gotta figure out what it was for?

If they don't want those forms, what do they want then?
Yea exactly my problem. Don't get me wrong I'd be very happy if I could just make the payments and never have to submit another form again. :)

The big problem I've found in my case is that turnover tax is very uncommon, so it's really hard to get info on it even from people who ought to know.

What they did was send you the original documents to keep as proof in case of an audit.

The point about the incorrect documents seems to be an automated reply that didn’t apply to you. This may have been a glitch

Thanks, I guess it's probably something like this. I'll try email them and see what they say (if anything).
