Johannesburg - Crime intelligence officials made the second largest drug bust in the country's history on Friday morning seizing drugs and equipment worth well over R1bn, police said.

Police raided a drug factory on a farm in Brakpan, east of Johannesburg and two people were arrested, said Senior Superintendent Tummi Golding.

"We have been counting up from this morning and so far the value of the drugs [tik] itself is sitting at R1.2m while the equipment, and chemicals were worth over R1bn," she said.

But the figure was expected to be much higher once it had all been tallied up.


Friday's bust came after an intense police operation.

Golding said the laboratory had been established by Nigerians.

"It is a fully fledged laboratory, it is a very big one, it is very huge. It has all the equipment to produce tik, from the compressors to the processing machines."

"From our intelligence gathering, two others are still at large."

Officials were still establishing whether the four men owned the farm or rented it.

The suspects, aged 21 and 39, were due to appear in court soon.

I thought tik was very cheap to make - so why 1.2 B of equipment and only 1.2 Mil of the drug. Even if they had made and sold 10 times that amount it still doesn't look profitable.

And can you imagine the storage space needed for R1.2 billion of chemicals. They must have rented an entire industrial area for this...and do you really need more money if you already have R1.2 billion??

You do know that Northern Nigeria is MOSLEM.

It is not so much about the money but about rhe POWER that being a drug dealer of this size gives you.

With this ammount these guys could take over the Cape-Flats. probably take over the WP. ( The Cops are so EASY to bribe )

I am VERY suprised that Crime Intelligence is not taking a MUCh deeper look into this -- especially as 2010 is just around the corner.

With all the smaller busts, looks like they're at about R2.1 billion for the year. That's pretty large for a country our size :/

Because cops never really know the value of the narcotics
The numbers they drop are nothing but epeen

If you get caught growing weed for example, they weight entire bush and dont consider that X% of the plant cannot be smoked.
And you will probably get charged for the entire amount(pot included ,no pun) when in actually fact the useable weight isnt even half of their numbers

Im not saying that its wrong, any1 manufacting narcotics is wrong. I just think they wish they made a bust that big
