SA's fibre war

Telkom's wholesale and networks division Openserve has recorded continued growth over the past financial year, the company's annual results have revealed.

Vumatel has some of us by the “short and curly’s“. Charging R725.00 for 25/10 mbs because there isn’t any alternative in my area Plumstead Cape Town. Afrihost doesn’t offer any other alternative. There are faster and cheaper packages but can’t take advantage of them. Sucks as Vumatel won’t match or even entertain it. Seriously cannot wait to have an option so I can move away from them. Living in hope

Same here, I have to rely on Openserve DSL and no sign of Openserve fiber or any other FNO in Hersham Great Brakriver Western Cape. None have plans to do any rollout in my area, even if it is a wealthy area. Suburbs not even 10km away have either Openserve fiber, Frogfoot, Octotel or all of them. Eveyone tells me Openserve fiber is coming, so I must just be patient I guess. Hopefulle before Christmas 2024.

The only mention of war is in the article's title, I'm not seeing any fibre war in SA, not even heated competition (mediocre at best).

Very true. As with most things here , competition against each other only exists in the press releases but in practice customers on the whole cannot benefit.

Openserve and Vumatel don't compete against each other because they have policies of generally not rolling out where fibre already exists.

Rollout is one aspect of competition, another is price and Vumatel is infamous for much higher prices compared to OpenServe (ironically).

Are the Vuma promo prices permanent?
Will my 927 get me 100Mbps?

I’m with Vumatel through Afrihost. I got hold of Afrihost and asked them about the deals and was told that are deals coming into play from the 1st July. Maybe your package will also change. Get hold of your ISP.

I'm also with AfriHost on Vuma and got upped because of the promo but see that they prices have changed. Might be worth it downgrading to save the buck since 50Mbps is fine for a 2 member household.
