SA's plan for a stated-owned cloud computing mega-network

Investment in data centres and cloud services shall comply with the provisions of broad-based black economic empowerment.

State owned but black built. Just more no value added middlemen that will add to the cost.

I honestly thought the previous article on this was an April Fool's joke
It's all good... A policy framework will just magically make a cloud from this excess capacity, no need to worry about the technical details.

I don't know if it's the Rochefort 8 I had over lunch, but I can see the future of this plan clear as day:
- BBBEE / RET etc tendas awarded to the highest briber
- project ends up billions over budget and years overdue
- infrastructure ends up being run by a Gupta owned company that just obfuscates AWS yet charges 20 times the AWS rates
- Jan van Riebeeck is blamed for every problem encountered
- guavamint continues to pay big bucks forever to maintain their legacy system anyway

This is the 4th corruption revolution

The data center will cost billions but just host WordPress sites. As soon as more capacity or bandwidth is needed for using anything else there won't be money

In 10 years time there will be workload shedding. Your vm will be turned off for 2.5 hours twice a day.
I would reckon it would operate more like a spot vm and it will just get evicted with 5 minutes notice and you need to short your application out.

You'd have to be a ****ing retard to host anything with this incompetent ****wits.
Anyone hosting their servers/services in this data center deserve the **** that will inevitably follow.

So it's all well and good to be ambitious and build a cloud for hosting government infrastructure.

What's worrying is that this government has a history of making dumb policies like "hey, if you want a government contract 50% of your infrastructure must be hosted with us".

It's only for government,SOEs and universities.

Imagine the upcoming MaSSIVe BreAcH articles coming soon.

What @ToxicBunny said. A document can't do anything. People do.

It's a waste of money. As usual.
Another failed attempt. Vague promises. Poor implementation and the information of an entire country susceptible to outside attack and collection.

All because the password was in a text file on someone's Desktop.

Businesses too. ;)
According to the policy, the HPCDPC will provide cloud services for state entities, national departments, provinces, municipalities, metros, SOEs, universities, research centres, civil society organisations, and businesses registered in South Africa.
