Sat 3 & Safe cable

I was just reading up about the SAT 3 and Safe cable network.

It looks like there is only +/- 10 years shelf life left on those cables? The were laid roughly the same time, in the early 90's

I wounder what will happen when time runs out on those cables - will be back to square one? Which ever monopoly owns the cable is going to scew us over?

I know a new a cable is being laid, but it will only have 170 Gig capacity, half on what the old can handle.

Fibre can last alot longer than 15 years.. Thats why its build in segments, small patches can be applied to broken "pieces".

Well, the fibre can last, but there is a life on the submerged shielding. Afaik it has a 25 year life, thats the usual norm. Generaly this is because after 25 years you should be laying more cable, I guess you can think of it the same way companies treat business cars.

Life 1km below the ocean surface is not so easy the cables lie there freely.

Thats funny, the last time I checked there were more than 10 cables down there, some of them laid late 90s other after than...

The cable landing on the North Natal Coast was only completed in 2002 I think... +15 years = 2017. At which time we'll all be flying around in spaceships.

ahahaha, okay, really. At that time, our ISP's will have multi-terabit connections and we'll have tons of megabits, going everywhere. touch cable. I mean cpu. I mean wood. Oak.

Its good that the cables have a limited life. With new techologies being developed all the time, the lines have to be replaced with a superior and probably cheaper technology - who knows, in ten years time they probably won't even need to lay a physical cable down!
