Broken undersea cables slowing down South Africa's Internet repaired

Telkom’s wholesale and networks division Openserve has announced that the South Atlantic 3 (SAT–3) undersea cable has been repaired and connectivity restored.

SAT–3 was the last of three cables to be repaired that suffered breaks due to a suspected rockfall in the Congo Canyon off the West coast of Africa on 6 August.

Just got this in the mail:

Outage Description:
AFFECTED SERVICES: West African Cable System (WACS) and the South Atlantic 3 (SATâ??3).
SERVICE IMPACT: Slow and or degraded speeds to international destinations.
CAUSE OF EVENT: Under Sea Cable Breaks.
CURRENT STATUS: Due to the decrease of international capacity caused by the undersea cable breaks, users from South Africa could experience an intermittent degradation of services to international destinations during peak times.

When did the repair finish? My Vodacom LTE data sim suddenly slowed down last night at 10pm. Went from being able to stream 1080p video all day fine to constant buffering.

The SAT-3 cable has been down since August 3, so your dip in connection at 10pm last night is not due to cable break.

Cable is supposed to be fixed but streaming services are still borked during peak hours. Something is still effed up somewhere.

Anybody else experiencing mad Buffering issues in the evening? Maybe a follow up article is in order?

I can guarantee you that's not due to a cable break. Who is your ISP? What connection do you have? What package are you on?

Herotel Fibre 50 / 50

Herotel Fibre. 50 up / 50 down. Local Speedtests run at advertised speeds whole day long but connecting to anything overseas slows to a crawl on the download side. Upload seems unaffected.
