I want buy a 1TB drive for my video streamer. It supports SATA HDD - but I see SATAII is cheaper and prefer SATAII for future.

Am I able to get a SATAII and run it at SATA speed when in a SATA device and SATAII when it a SATAII device?

Nice to know they will improve on a piece of technology, and try to keep backwards compatibility.

So if you've got an MFM HDD still lying around, you can chuck it out, that interface have died for good. :D

They are the same connection, I think you can make a SATA2 into a normal SATA usually - with Seagates you remove a pin somewhere.

There really is no such thing as SATAII.

SATA II misnomer

Popular usage may refer to the SATA 3 Gbit/s specification as "Serial ATA II" ("SATA II" or "SATA2"), contrary to the wishes of the Serial ATA International Organization (SATA-IO) which defines the standard. SATA II was originally the name of a committee defining updated SATA standards, of which the 3 Gbit/s standard was just one. However since it was among the most prominent features defined by the former SATA II committee, the name SATA II became synonymous with the 3 Gbit/s standard, so the group has since changed names to the Serial ATA International Organization, or SATA-IO, to avoid further confusion.
