SATA drive not detected

You need to write a signature to the disk using disk manager.

Right click "My Computer" the click "Manage"

Go into "Disk Management" and create a partition and assign a drive letter.

To do what you want to do get a copy of Partition Manager or Acronis TrueImage

I have a board with similar chipsets and its working happily with a Seagate 160Gb SATA II hdd. If kevf's advice doesnt work, try the drive in the friend/family member's PC to make sure it works (just make sure they give back the right drive ;)).
