Ok, here we go, it looks like that iBurst is not getting any better, and they admited that they are not even trying to make it better, so hanging around with useless connection is out of question.

So I started looking at what options are available for satellite internet, preferably from overseas ISP, so there are no SA companies involved.

It looks like that one can get 512/256 bi-directional satellite link for about 150 euro/month, which I think is not bad, because there are no traffic limits.

The problem is, that the installation cost around 2000 euro, which is quite expensive.

I will keep researching, if you have any information in this regards, please post it.

that's cool - and also relatively cheap... beware of the lag, though, the speed of light is only so fast, and satellites have to bounce your signal a *long* way back to europe.

sound's realy cool... let us know where ur research leads...

The lag WILL be a problem but if you aren't palying games, SSH or the likes and just want to do something like rape the P2P scene / browse the web then it sounds perfect...

U sure its not illegal or some other kuk in this country... and is the installation price for here or in europe, cuz then it'll be a fair bit more here..

How about no limitation adsl with 5 fixed ips, 2 years contract for R1500 per month. maybe it could be one of ur choice?

Yes, I am aware of the lag (apparently can get up to 2 sec), but I prefer lag, rather than disconnection every few minutes and somebody telling me what I can do and cannot do with my internet connection ...

I am looking for other installation options as 2000 euros is a bit overkill.

I don't know how legal it is, but if that is not legal, I wonder if it is legal to live in this country at all ...

adsl = telcum .... no thanks!

see, the point of satellite from my point of view is to avoid dealing with SA ISPs. After dealing with WBS I had enough. I want some decent ISP, that will keep to what they advertise, that will provide me with proper internet connectivity, rather than some parody of internet that can hardly be used even for web browsing.

If there were an uncapped, international only service for comparable international prices - would you guys go for it?

Ok, just want to tell you an off topic story here, if you are bored and have nothing to do. Here it goes:

Few months ago I wanted to buy some accessories for my hobby, I went on the net, I found all the stuff I needed (read reviews etc, so I choose the best stuff). Then I went to Rosebank shopping center in one of the biggest specialised shops in the area with my list of stuff. It turned out that they did not have 80% of the stuff I had on my list, they had only cheaper versions and bunch of hacks (ideas) how to use what they had to achive the functionality I wanted.

So I went back home, sat on my PC, found an american web site and ordered all the stuff online, exactly the stuff I wanted. A week later I received them at my doorstep perfectly packaged etc. After paying 100 US$ for UPS delivery, paying VAT and import duty and the price of the stuff, I got exactly what I wanted, for around 20% less than the price I would have paid to get the same functionality by buying cheaper version of the stuff (and not the exact ones that I wanted in terms of functionality) from Rosebank.

So the bottom line is I got more for less by buying from the states, instead from the nearby shopping center!

I think the same will hold for the internet ... here they want you to pay what 180R for 1GB? If you can get it from Europe, you will pay R180 for 20 GB probably, and nobody will tell you how you are suppose to use your connection!

actually beware, internet regulations in europe do not always favour the user and the ones that do may not apply to you. Why not get something more feasable, cheap and with room for growth, nothing wrong with uncapped ADSL

its because of the length the signal has to travel that causes the lag, and no, i do not think it works with light...

Swordfish - came thing here i could not get a pair of takkies here that fit me and they were R1200 - my friend just came from LA and brought them with - ended up csoting me R240 for the same damn thing. We get raped here and seem to enjoy it ???

order your shoes from Amazon! Thats what I do, I go to the shops here , try the ones I want one, and then order the correct size from the USA. Much cheaper, if retailers want to be stupid here then I wont support them.

slimothy, because adsl = telkom, as I said before!

until we support this idiots they won't do a **** to improve the situation! If they start losing customer, then they will figure out that the big bonuses are about to slip away ...

uncapped ADSL cost about R1600 as far as I can see ... don't you think that this is a bit too much for something that cost R200 in the rest of the world ... maybe if it was once off, I would have closed my eyes and pay for it ... but that is x12 x X years ... means a lot of money, sponsoring some fat ass ******* to buy a mansion!!!

And besides that, I don't know why, but I suspect that the uncapped ADSL is uncapped only in the advertisings ... did you ever try downloading lets say 120GB (80% ot the theoretical limit) for a month to check if they will be ok with it? Because iBurst is uncapped as well as far as I am concerned ... I am supposed to have 64 Kbps at all times ... but I don't! I have a big **** at all times! So I think the uncapped ADSL is the same story, it is uncaped but probably you can use it for web browsing and email only :-)

And can somebody tell me, they say you are not suppose to use P2P on the cheap packages, but it is ok (I assume) to max out the connection downloading from HTTP ... so how does it make difference for them if I will be using HTTP or P2P? The traffic cost the same at the end of the day. So the bottom line for them is not to preserve bandwidth, it is all about money. They don't give a **** if you max out the connection, they just want to force you buy they most expensive package ... well they can go to hell!

thanks rebel, I already went through that page and have sent few emails ... hope somebody replies.

I sent emails to few other companies not listed on that page as well.

but dont radio waves travel at the speed of light? just curious.
i know it took like 6 minutes for communications to reach mars probes when sent from earth. sounds like speed of light.
