Hi,

I have family that live smack bang in the middle of nowhere. The nearest town is Hartswater (about 7km) and the nearest city is Kimberley (I believe about 170km away).

So, there is no ADSL, 3G, WiMax coverage. I guess the only option left to them is satellite, right? If so, is Telkom's SpaceStream Office the one to go for as they would also like to avail of some voice lines as well?

Any suggestions will be much appreciated!

For what use?
For just email and minimum browsing, GPRS may be OK.

Well, it is mostly for business use and they would like an alway-on solution. They are on GPRS at the moment and want to upgrade from that. The voice lines are important as well as those will be routed through to the office.

Internet over satellite provides a not bad speed, but the PING is very bad. (>500ms)

Is ISDN available?
Dualchannel ISDN = 128 kbps synchronous

do NOT take the spacestream office - as it is ONLY 64kbps MAX...

rather go for spacestream express offers up to 512kbps with 3gb cap....

yeah i know you need voice aswell - but the SSO product's performance just is super slow...

trust me - 1st hand experience with both.

latency = 900-1100ms

There are no cables available at the moment as they have been stolen, so ISDN is not available. They are actually trying to go completely wireless because the cables are being stolen very frequently there.

So, the voice lines are a must. Can one not get a voice line with SSE 512kb?

no voice with SSE512 - sorry :P

why not organize microwave voice?

give me your google earth coordinates of office in question.

according to google earth - there are 3 VERY SMALL patches of coverage for 3g/hsdpa - but i wouldn't get my hopes high..

but

the map suggests that this area is 100% covered with EDGE (which is pretty good).

get a high gain pointing antenna , with a 3meter pole and a data card that can run with the mdma/e620 tool -... with a bit of luck either 3g or edge!

Great! Thanks for that, I will see what can be done. Thanks again for the help.
