Hi, saw an article on SATJapan. Used cars from Japan for sale in SA. Prices are far too good. Anyone actually explored this?

I saw the article just night too and then hopped on over to their website. Would be fantastic if legit.

Pricing is probably before shipping and taxes.

But it should be a lot cheaper as I seem to recall Japan has that weird taxation rules where cars are pretty much unaffordable once 5 or 10 years old.

Goodluck actually getting it registered in SA though. SA is just used as a hub for foreign countries to buy from.

price listed on the Website is excl shipping, tax, customs, clearance, etc.
If you hit "inquire" and give your details, they whatsapp a price including Shipping, but not including Customs, clearance, etc. That's something you can arrange with them.
But the import permit, ITAC form and all the stuff u need to register the vehicle legally, is for you to do.

Sounds expensive and you end up paying more than if you just went to the stealership?

Well, maybe. The cars i enquired about:
1) 1986 Toyota Sprinter Trueno, R191945 plus Shipping. This car is not avail in SA and could be imported as a collector item.
2) 2015 Lexus RC-F - R422 352 Plus Shipping. Lexus did sell the RC-f Here in SA, so If I applied, it would probably not be approved, but, the same car Retails for min R800k here.

They are a lot cheaper. About 50 to 60% cheaper.
Only if you have owned the car for longer than 2 years in a foreign country can one import it as a returning resident.
The paperwork is a nightmare.

There are other allowances for imports though.

it is a moerse effort, but for the right car, it could be well worth the effort.

Nissan GTR.
Classic Cars at 40% import duty.
If as a returning resident its VAT and then the fun starts.
What I can remember.
Interpol clearance.
Data Dot.
Roadworthy.
Car must be weighed.
Proof of being out of the country for 2 years or more.
Its a nightmare.
Protecting the wokas and local industry is the problem.

This Japan import thing has been going for YEARS. You can't register it in SA, unless that has changed (didn't read the article). So the guys used to buy it from Japan, and register it in Moz or Zim.

Those keen on it and have the will and/cash, get in touch with Skylow Imports (CPT) or Rospa Imports (KZN). I personally know people who have imported cars using these 2 companies and have been very happy with their services.
Rospa also recently announce they are negotiating with a specific bank to arrange financing for imports

Edit, not sure if Skylow is still operating.
