Thank you for all the tips! Lots to think about. Anybody have a good broker in Jozi to recommend?

Is this your only savings, or just a part of it? If it's your only saving then I wouldn't put it all in Satrix, shares are risky. Especially if you keep it all in the SA equity market. I'd put some in something more safe, just to keep it diversified. Unless you don't mind taking the risk. Disclaimer: I'm just a layman.

Best to speak to someone.

It's a starting point, but I agree, asking Satrix to supply the figures when comparing their Investment Plan to other brokers is not the best journalism.

Low cost brokers is probably the way to go, however, just to throw a spanner in the works, another factor not considered is the cost of reinvesting the dividends. Looking at my STD bank share trading account, these brokerage fees have basically cancelled the dividend payouts over the last 3 years. I believe the investment plans include these costs in their annual fees?

Quite right, if there's a minimum fee the re-investment would kill you with fees. With ABSA the minimum is R120 (the fee for R30k worth of trading), so automatically reinvesting a dividend payout of a few hundred would be ludicrous. What I do is hold my dividends in cash until I reach the R30k needed to get value for money from the fees.

That said, with easyequities they say no minimum, so you could just as well buy a single share for R60 and only pay R0.15 in broker fees!

That's precisely what's been killing me, those minimum fees! Thanks for the excellent advice Patrick; I'll be taking the cash - and paying close attention to easyequities.
