Satrix - people still using them?

Urg...just spoke to them. She said if I want to do a section 14 out (basically the RA funds gets moved to Allan Gray RA), then there will be penalties...but cant tell me how much. She needs to get a quote from who ever and will call me within 24 - 48 hours with the amount. Fck..there is so little in that RA and now gonna have to give some of that up in penalties also! CRAP! No wonder people are strugling to fcking SAVE!!!!!!!!!!!!!
As far as I remember, with Liberty, if you took out a RA after 2005 it's probably what they call their "Excelsior" range. If it is one of those, then you should be able to transfer it out after five years without any penalty (check your policy document for the penalty scale if it hasn't been five years yet).

If you've already been paying for a few years then most of the fees should be paid off - the ones that go to your advisor.

You may just want to continue paying the minimum monthly fee and avoid penalties.
Then start a 2nd one somewhere else.

I cant afford two...I either have to stay with Liberty or move to Allan Gray..but the way you guys talk...it sounds like Allan Gray gives a better return...so maybe its worth it?

You sure you're not referring to an endowment policy?

Retirement is a long term thing.

How long have you been paying into yours?

Yes, quite sure. They have both RAs and endowments under the "Excelsior" label. I did manage to transfer an RA that I started in 2006 at Liberty to another provider last year - without any penalties being applied.

But that is only like 2% more than what I am getting on my Capitec savings account? I was browsing the net today a bit for more info on the Satrix stuff...and I saw things like 18% being thrown arround? Is this no true then? I was planning on taking R3000.00 out of my savings and dumping in into Satrix. In your honest opinion xrapidx...you think its worth it?

To soon to say... remember, these investments are medium term. Looking at the history, I think from a year on you'd start seeing some progress.

You can't compare to a 5 month period. Satrix is a long-term investment - 3 to 20 years+. You must have the ability to ride out the bad times and utilise rand-averaging (buying when prices are weak).

I'm not an investment advisor, but I see it as a good medium to long term investment, forces you to save and gives you a fairly inexpensive exposure to equities - which OVER TIME should always beat inflation (i.e. real growth) and savings account interest.

I've been buying Satrix monthly for the last 5 years.

BUT I WANT ME MONEY NOW DAMMIT! Urg...patience never have been one of my strong points. DAMMIT DAMMIT DAMMIT!

Remember - markets have been pretty ****ty lately :p Time will tell - I'm interested to see how it performs against the Allan Gray Balanced Fund, which at the moment is also set at R1,500/month.

Time is the key and you will see long term compounding interest gains.
5 years should be minimum.

Nothing wrong with SATRIX but RA's are a BIG waste of money. If you want advice from experts, go to www.sharechat.co.za
Join the forum and ask questions. Before you post a question, go back in the pages and see if your question has been posted before.
This is the best website for questions like these. There are some great minds there and a few feeble ones as well that will chirp in but after awhile you will get used to the guys there. Some are registered brokers and some are traders.
Check out the post "Good Dog Shares" and you will dump all your RA's and STX and make not 7% PA but 70%.

I just started my new RA :-/

But purely as a backup for one day... not a large amount of money

I would cry big time if I got a mere 7% pa. I was with Allan Gray years ago and thought I was doing well until the 2008 crash and my investment dropped 35% in 2 days before I closed the account and prevented a further 10% loss. Unit Trust managers will not get out in times of crises as it will cause a snowball effect. You can choose the same shares as they do via Imaraspreid brokers and have complete control of your account. Sell at a click of a button on your cell phone. Or buy if you wish.

Quick question guys....I have come to the conclusion that the DIVI and FINI is the best option according to the below stats....u agree?

Gonna take R3000.00 and then maybe split it
R2000.00 Divi
R1000.00 Fini

Whatcha think?

Past performance isn't necessarily a good indicator of the future.

If it was me, I'd put 50% in Satrix 40, 25% in DIVI, 25% in one of the other funds - and then forget about it. Don't stare yourself blind at the last 6 months' return - it doesn't mean a lot.

mmmm kay...I just dont want to spread it so thinly though. It is only R3000.00.
