Is it possible for me to invest money for my child on the SATRIX from time to time (i.e. not regularly)? Or does SATRIX require regular investments?

There are various Satrix products (ETF's and ETN's)
These are traded just like any other stock. So you can buy some Satrix 40 (The most famous Satrix product) every now and then as you require. You can do it via your regular broker or I think Satrix offers their own brokerage

On that timescale I'd rather park it across an internationally diversified portfolio (both currency and countries) but SA may be easier I guess.
