Unfortunately when it comes to logistics, truck drivers have this country by the short & curlys.

Why don't other countries have this problem? Do they pay them better? What is the comparison?

Unions i reckon and sense of entitlement. Through out africa and many other countries. Destroys the country eventually because the more you allow striking the more you give them the more they want the more they strike the higher their demands.

One thing i do like about america is they don't negotiate with terrorists :D. That is something that should be used in this country. You want to strike? Then best be prepared to get Fking beaten by riot police and fired.

Make them scared of striking, at the moment the government is empowering this strike trend by going easy on the people. Bring back good old riot police i say and show these strikers a thing or two about violence. Yes that was totally racist and uncalled for :D, of course this will said so let's get it out the way

We keep having the past shoved down our throats so why not show some examples of how it was handled, seeing is better than hearing daily. Would be epic seeing the black police force go old school riot style on the strikers :D

They should setup Grand stands and sell tickets for spectators for additional Revenue. Hell, let the Games begin - LOL... No hold on ... that was Rome

They do. There is a truckers strike just about every year or two in France, for example, with roadblocks, etc... that just about shuts down both French and UK continental trucking for days on end. There is a strike in Columbia atm that has been going on for 2 weeks already, affecting coffee and other exports, and seems unlikely to end soon.

This is exactly how these guys were thought during apartheid/now, If you don't like this, brake it down and then "we will get something new."
Dunno. I think part of the problem is the Tripartite Alliance setup...the government can't do anything to piss of the labour unions.

Maybe South Africans just have a violent streak? Breaking something/harming someone appears to be the preferred solution lately. Remnants of the struggle mentality perhaps?

Strikes sure, but do they attack each other with pangas?

Police arrest 28 striking truck drivers

http://www.ewn.co.za/articleprog.aspx?id=59671

Police arrested 28 suspected striking truck drivers during organised operation in Centurion on Thursday.

Several protesters wearing red South African Transport and Allied Workers’ Union (Satawu) shirts were rounded up in a field near the Pinedene. Police used a helicopter and police dogs for the operation.

The men allegedly looted and burnt two trucks in Main Road between Irene and Olifantsfontein. They will be charged with arson and attempted murder.

Truck drivers across South Africa downed tools on Monday over a wage dispute.

This follows a deadlock between the Satawu and the Road Freight Association (RFA) over pay increases. Unions are demanding a 10 percent increase over the next two years, while the RFA revised its offer from 7.5 percent to 8 percent.

The revised offer was presented to unions late on Thursday afternoon.

Meanwhile, Satawu’s Zenzo Mahlangu said they were still locked in talks with the RFA on Thursday afternoon.

“We are negotiating, obviously they moved from 7.5 by a 0.5 percent,” he said.

“It might not be anything that one can go and sell to the workers. We hope that there will be movement from the both side to a reasonable kind of level.”

I really, really hope they make an example of these guys!

They got employers to offer 9% (x2 this year & next), against a 3.7 CPI. Very effective. Maybe next time they'll bring AK47 for superior [-]extortion[/-] negotiation results.

I just hope the gov wakes up soon & realizes that the unions they made powerful via their labour laws must be restrained.:(

@mods: Can't find an existing truck strike thread. If there is one, then just merge this into existing.

Maybe it's just me but surely if you're driving a truck and there's a rather angry-looking mob, you'd just gently mow through them (or rapidly, if they look set to torch you) rather than putting your life at risk by stopping and/or getting out?

I, for one, would rather have a bunch of them under my tyres if they won't get out of my way than be at their mercy without (at least) having put up a fight.

Strikers be damned.

Striking is one thing. Riots, destruction of property and intimidation/killing people is not part of the deal.

I imagine it's quite fun getting caught up in all this. As a no-hope prawn, what else is there to life?

The cops need to toughen up. Hose the okes down with rubber bullets the moment they get even half agitated. Make striking less 'fun' and people won't be as keen to go overboard.

The mob mentality needs management. Clear guidelines that are rigidly enforced might bring some semblance of order back...

The UK & France have had their fair share of transport & truck driver strikes. Not sure how they were resolved.

Big differences probably revolve around poor pay I'm relation to the inhumane conditions many of them work under. Their hours are long. Often expected to do trips from Joburg to Durban to Joburg to Cape Town with tight deadlines and woefully little sleep.

Wellness campaigns find them exhausted, high blood pressure, sugar lows, etc and are all indicative of their conditions of work. Yet they are entrusted with rigs and cargo worth millions. Add to this trucks which are not always well maintained. Conditions are not good.

South Africa we have a higher dependence on our trucks than other first world countries almost solely due to a rail network that is badly maintained. By train, apart from the ailing infrastructure, theft of cargo is rife.

and w1z4rd wonders why people hate unions....

Pointless strike. Ones making R4k a month, will still end up making less then their mates working for a good company. Where is the scale of economy? Unions should rather fight for minimum wage. Not all drivers make peanuts, but are forced to strike because of solidarity.
In a country where nearly 1 in 2 is unemployed, be glad u have a job, and strive for better conditions.

Maybe the union should address the matter of the tollgates. Give its members some spending power rather than a R400 increase. There is a lot of ways they can help their members without terrorizing the whole country and bringing it down to its knees.

Of those that last long enough to get 10%. The chances of them loosing the job are pretty good. Employer needs to bear the increases in salaries, increases in tollgates, increases in diesel costs. That's about 70% of ur income gone. And God forbid, u have a breakdown, or need to replace some tires.

Poor bastards will loose their jobs, and sit at home thinking of his 10% he had, and how it is not helping him anymore, while the cost of living has gone up.
