Johannesburg - A campaign by Save South Africa has been flooded with messages of support since making a call for a people’s assembly to discuss state capture.

South Africans have been offering to help the campaign’s demonstrations against state capture in November, one of its steering committee members, Lawson Naidoo, said on Monday.

“We have received numerous phone calls and are in consultation with a number of political parties as well as civil society over a plan of action for November 2,” Naidoo said.

The protests will take place as Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan, former South African Revenue Service commissioner Oupa Magashula and former deputy commissioner Ivan Pillay appear in the Pretoria Regional Court.

They were charged with fraud for their role in granting Pillay early retirement in 2010, and re-hiring him on a contract later. Gordhan was Sars commissioner between 1999 and 2009.

‘Maximum impact’

Many have said the National Prosecuting Authority’s decision to charge the three with fraud was part of a plot to unseat Gordhan as finance minister, due to his attempts to crack down on corruption and maladministration in President Jacob Zuma’s Cabinet.

Founders of the Save South Africa campaign, including Anglo Ashanti CEO Sipho Pityana and former ministers Trevor Manuel and Barbara Hogan, have described the move as “nothing less than an unbridled attempt at further state capture, and designed to get unfettered access to state resources”.

The Economic Freedom Fighters and the Democratic Alliance have called on their supporters to demonstrate in defence of South Africa’s democracy on November 2.

Save South Africa said in a statement that interested parties, including civil society organisations, trade unions, faith-based bodies, businesses, and foundations had approached it.

The campaign intended to co-ordinate their initiatives on November 2, to ensure it had “maximum impact”.

“This is a crucial moment in our history, and we should use it to demonstrate that we will not allow corruption to continue. The looting must stop. Integrity must rise,” the campaign said.

As stated previously, if these charges do not stick and amount to a solid conviction, Abrahams head needs to roll.

You can't f#$% **** like this up, not at that level and get away with it.

He's trying to sleaze his way out of it with that offer to Gordhan to review...Pravin gave that the finger so this mofo is stuck pursuing this for now. Good.

I'm thinking he'll "uncover" something that renders the case un-prosecutable miraculously.

Abrahams will survive this storm without a scratch. If this case gets dismissed and no convictions; things will settle down and everything will carry on like normal. Abrahams will got to his boss and say he tried his best. Next year they will attack Gordhan again.

I hope the action is well supported, it may just scare the ANC into action. If they see 100s of 1000s of Gauntegers out in the streets they may get jolted into doing something. They'd start to see the writing on the wall come 2019 and the thought of losing the province outright may make them recall numero uno. But we know that like the anti-crime march most people will chose to speak from their arm chairs instead of taking real action.

agree, totally, most people will protest from their armchair and not on the street where it will be felt more prominently...

It will have zero impact unless they burn things down, throw stones at the cops and intimidate everyone else. Sadly, that's the only language that seems to make any impression these days.

In a 1st world country, sure. Here, the ANC will just pull the race card. Like it did with the #zumaMustFall marches.

His head will roll alright.. Roll straight into a cushy ambassadorship in Germany or Japan.

Picket for Pravin will continue even if charges are dropped

Pretoria - The Save South Africa campaign will continue with a planned picked outside the Pretoria Magistrate’s court when Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan appears on November 2, irrespective of speculation that charges may be dropped.

In a statement released on Sunday, Save South Africa said that the “People’s Assembly Against State Capture” would go ahead as they are “even more committed now to intensifying action to rescue the captured state”.

“We have noted speculation that the National Prosecuting Authority may drop the charges, which would vindicate what we and many other organisations have been saying all along. They [the charges] were politically motivated and have no basis in law.”

They said that if charges were dropped the assembly would signify a victory rally.

“We are in discussion with all the formations that have already committed to the People’s Assembly, encouraging them to stay with us and to commemorate this achievement. These include civil society organisations, the major political parties, political stalwarts, organised labour, Business Unity (BUSA) and the CEO Initiative, and professionals.”
