Want to have some fun using a web-cam on Ubuntu? I suggest you get your hands on the Cheese application. You can grab it straight from the Ubuntu Software Centre in the applications menu by searching for the term “cheese”. This neat little program can be used to snap some still images or video shots with fancy effects applied in real time. I cannot possibly understate how awesome this program really is and you will be playing with it for hours on end if you are lucky enough to have so much time. One thing is for sure, your Facebook profile shots will never be the same.
The program is one of the results of the 2007 Google SUMMER OF CODE competition and uses GStreamer to apply effects to photos and videos. It is continued development and if you haven’t discovered it yet, give it a go!

You can run multiple effects at the same time using this program and make the image show effects of for instance vertigo and dice together. The dice effect will slice the image into hundreds of tiny blocks and shuffle those blocks. On a live video image that is just to awesome for words!
