I was shocked and dismayed when I read that Telkom’s previous US shareholder, SBC, shipped their legislative department over to SA to ‘help’ draft our Telecommunications Act.
Ann Crotty’s article in Business Report states clearly that as soon as SBC got whiff of the fact that they could grab a significant stake in Telkom they pounced.
“In an interview with the authors last year, Myers explained that when it became clear that SBC would secure the Telkom stake, ‘the company temporarily transferred its entire San Antonio [Texas] corporate office legislative team to South Africa to help draft the Telecommunications Act, to make sure the legislation comported with the company’s requirements’,” quotes Crotty.
It is shocking that the ANC allowed an international company to drag our telecommunications industry through the mud for close on 10 years thereby irrevocably damaging the competitiveness of a whole sector.
The damage is done what is left to be seen is how the ANC manage to pull this industry up by its feet so that we can once again see a bit of competition in this sector of the SA economy.
