Scam Cell C

Hi people. This is a clever (wicked) scam. A guy phone me on Saterday 5 September 2009 with a story that I won a competition (being a Cell C subscriber) and the prize is this and that but if you want you can convert the price to a cash pay out worth R20000,00 I was told what to do and did everything as told. This is how it works.
I was to buy a R150,00 Cell C recharge voucher from any Engen or Caltex filling station within the next hour and phone this number 0746718961 within that hour. (That I did) Returning his call he told me not to use this recharge voucher until Monday 12:00h because before Monday a agent from Cell C would visit me. I was to give him the recharge voucher, he will give me a new voucher to the same value and a cheque for R20000,00 which I can then bank immediatley. The voucher which I bought would be faxed to Cell C Offices and as soon as they verify that the Serial number, Seq number and Pin number (which I had to give him when I returned his call) are the same, they release the stop on the cheque and there u go, u have received u'r prize.
Now how lekka does that not sound, hey?
Nobody ever pitched at my house so Monday, 07 September 2009 just after 12:00h I tried to recharge my Account with the voucher but it wouldn't work. I contacted Cell C and I must say they were brilliant. After contacting 3 more toll free numbers they gave me I had R100,00 of the R150,00 back and put it on my phone. The scammers only used R50,00 of the airtime they managed to steel from me.
I would like to congratulate Cell C and thank them for their help and concern about the scam. Well done people.
The idea behind this thread is obviously to warn everybody out there about this scam.

well, no offence, but if you want to be an idiot and give your recharge pin and voucher number to random people... you deserved to be scammed....

why don't you put your credit card details in your sig?
 
hey dont attack slumdog like that he is new we got to show him how new people do things around here :P

yeah, soz, but dammit....

basically:

"Hi you won"
"great, what do i do"
"go buy a R150 voucher, sms me the pin and voucher #, the wait till monday"
"awesome, can't get more legit than this"

i just get mad a gullible people, you should know that people in SA are looking to screw you out of whatever they can.

hopefully slum has learned a valuable lesson out of this!

Point is, Slumdog was caught out, he realised that if it could happen to him, it could happen to someone else, so he posted it here, with good intentions, to spread the word.

I for one would say thanks, Slumdog, it could be one of my Kids that this happens to, heaven forbid :mad:

Of course the really savvy ones here, it could never happen them could it :rolleyes:
 
Thank you for the warning slumdog.

I know I sound preachy, but please bare with me, these days there are so many scams out there. If you get calls from people you don't know and they give you strange instructions, immediately expect a scam.

Never give "admin fees", credit card details, pin numbers, ID numbers and passwords over the phone. Scammers mostly use prepaid cell numbers, like 074 076 etc. so this is another clue.

Be alert, they want your money. If you really won something, you would never need to pay anything or phone anyone.
 
I would have enjoyed to be scammed by the scammer , as i would have scammed him to give me his recharge voucher
 
Thanks to everybody for their replies on my scam warning. It's true I'm an idiot and I was suckered out a R100.00, but you wont believe how many other idiots like me this sort of thing happens to. Cell C told us they had a lot of people phoning them about this scam. True about the credit card and bank details, that I know, and whenever that type of info is asked I never reviel that. I never thought you would find people going to so much trouble trying to steal such a small amount of money. (And airtime, wow, they must really be hardup to get airtime) Be that as it may, I hope it will help other people.
