DStv scam warning

Malicious actors are posing as MultiChoice staff offering DStv Rewards to try and steal money from customers by infecting their devices with malware. One victim lost R48,000 through the scam.

Speaking to 702, consumer journalist Wendy Knowler explained how Mpumalanga resident Witness Mjoli fell victim to a scam through which the caller got him to unknowingly install malware on his smartphone.

Whenever you hear "MultiChoice", run.

Here, just disconnect the call and switch it off for a few days.

I'd just like say to everyone reading the article that no self respecting technician will phone you and help you install software unless their mother made them do it. So check if you know their mother first before allowing anyone onto your PC.

"Fortunately, Capitec reimbursed Mjoli’s losses in full. However, it noted that the scammer didn’t directly access his banking app".

This begs the question, what sort of security systems does Capitec have that can be fooled like this?

This article reeks of click bait rubbish. How does malware access your bank account through your app with all the security the apps have nowadays?

Capitec reimbursed Mjoli’s losses in full. However, it noted that the scammer didn’t directly access his banking app.
.........................
The bank said the transaction appeared legitimate as it was processed on Mjoli’s device, using his credentials and selfie verification
erm, Capitec, at least keep your lies straight ... only one of those statements can be true, but not both, you choose

also, while I'm having a bit of a rant at my own bank ... your selfie verification process is a complete piece of shyte, if you login on the web and get prompted to do a bunch of steps in the app while the 60s timer is running it often reaches 0 before the slow as crap thing gets through startup, "checking for updates", processing the selfie etc

ALSO, the "checking for updates" kak ... wtf yo?!? thought it was a native app, clearly not, been outsourced to some el-cheapo hybrid app shop?

So help me out here:

"Mjoli explained that the caller kept him on the phone for around 10 minutes, during which she got him to click on an image link, read out a pin he had received, and open his selfie camera.

...
Fortunately, Capitec reimbursed Mjoli’s losses in full. However, it noted that the scammer didn’t directly access his banking app.

It explained that Mjoli may have unknowingly installed malware onto his device, probably posing as a DStv app promoting cheap or free viewing.

The malware likely enabled the scammer to intercept communications to Mjoli’s phone, including one-time PINs."

Was Mjoli the malware then?
FFS, there's ALWAYS a form of manipulation. Tricking someone.
But no, let's go with malware or hackers.

Started getting spammed by multiple "multichoice" and "DSTV" calls the past few weeks (labeled by Truecaller). Instant block both on my Phone and Truecaller. They keep on calling. I've blocked like 50 different numbers the past few weeks and they keep at it (keep getting those sms's from the voicemail saying I have a missed call) Makes me want to do things...

I have been inundated with spam calls over the last 2 weeks from what Truecaller said was multichoice spam. Wonder now if it was not these scammers?
