Any suggestions on a new flatbed scanner? My desk is a complete mess, and I've decided that digitising the documents on it will go a long way to cleaning it up. I only need to scan reflective A4 (and smaller) documents, but I need them to be searchable. I don't need OCR.
I need to tag each file with several fields (date, invoice number, quote number, etc.), custom fields that I can generate if I encounter an unusual document and maybe some check boxes to tag the more obvious documents together (invoice, quote, delivery note, etc.)
What's available (for free or included with a scanner)? Otherwise, maybe I just scan and assign sequential file names (IMG001, IMG002, etc) and reference them in a database, with a hotlink to open the image in Windows Picture and Fax Viewer. Something opensource and easy to use. I want each scan to take less than a minute, if possible.
Anyone had any experience with this sort of thing?
Edit: If I go with a DIY solution, what's the best file type? JPGs, multi-page TIFFs, or just scan to OpenOffice and save as a multi-page PDF?
