A friend bought a Tobisha laptop from Game about a year ago. The OS is Windows 7 Home Basic. She has a HP combined printer, copier, scanner. She can print and copy fine but for some reason she cannot scan. A so-called expert has told her that it's because Home Basic is very limited and she should upgrade to Windows 7 Professional. Has anyone else experienced this that they cannot scan if they have Windows 7 Home Basic?

I highly doubt that it is Windows fault. Just tell her to get some other scanning software... just google for free scanning or scan to PDF and you will find lots.

If she is still having a problem then I would say it lies with the drivers for her scanner.

She should replace the so-called expert.

I have found that as long as there is a TWAIN driver for that particular HP model you should not have an issue, save that you might need to create a shortcut on your desktop for the scanning application (HP).

I have a client with an old HP G85 more than 10 years old (brilliant device, I have the G95 [G85 networked] ) and all I needed to do was find which of the HP application files accessed the scanner and create a shortcut on my desktop to it.

Perhaps if you can specify the actual model of the HP device, the peeps on this forum can provide you with a solution. After all, an incomplete question usually results in an incomplete answer :(

it's bollocks, my wife's Sony Vaio has Home Basic and we also have an HP all in 1 and she can scan just fine

If you were running any version of Windows Vista, I would probably also blame the OS.
But there shouldn't be any issue with Windows 7.

Try uninstalling the printer completely (disconnect it from the laptop as well) and then
reinstall it (custom install) and select everything. This has worked for me in the past.
