just a though lets say the ANC gets a minority vote but is forced to go into a collision with what seem to be either the DA or cope at this point in time then wont it be a concern to us who do not agree to their policies mainly AA and bee. that the government elected would be the exact same ANC as 2 years ago with a chance of a majority vote together?

Isn't this scary?

As I've pointed out before the only purpose of COPE is too get the Mbeki crowd back on the gravy train.

The purpose of COPE is to solidify our democracy be creating a strong opposition. The only coalition which is more probable is of DA & COPE. I'm starting to like the botox lady more and more, she is a smart and sensible leader. South Africa needs more people like her.

If the ANC are "forced" into a coalition bear in mind the other party has to accept this and somehow I do not think COPE will nor the DA.

Would be interesting to see.

on this subject, glad i was not only one thinking of this....

so this is only based on my personal opinion, no proof or anything...

...conspiracy theory if you will

but what if cope is pulling a fast one over everyone. what if after the elections cope decide to make a coalition with the anc ie. joining the anc again.

as the anc is loosing support, so cope was born, to get the "lost" anc members, plus get a few thousand extra folks from the other communities as well.

so even if the anc doesn't get the 2/3 majority after the elections, with cope merging with them after the elections, they get the 2/3 that they need ie. we are screwed.

2 things that made me think of this, is that you regularly hear/read that cope believes in coalition (they never really mention who) and secondly, they like power - so joining the ruling party will give their top dogs big positions in parliament

That would be political suicide...after another 5 years the lost Anc vote would be double/tripple and there goes 50%.

A 2/3 majority is never a good but to paint it like the biggest thread to SA since the "swart gevaar" is ridiculous.

not exactly what i meant, but by having 2/3 it makes it easier for the ruling party to make legislation as it fits them - which is not good for any country

also quote from helen zille

The more power the ANC gets, the more power it abuses. The more power it abuses, the more corrupt it becomes. That is why we must keep the ANC below a two-thirds majority in this election. And this time we can do it, because the ANC has split.

Two-thirds is too much. It allows the ANC to change the Constitution unilaterally. And you can be sure that the ANC will change the Constitution to get Jacob Zuma off the hook. If the ANC gets a two-thirds majority, it will make Zuma's legal problems disappear. Zuma will walk away from his corruption trial a free man. He will join the other cadres who have already been placed above the law
