Scholarships & Study Grants

Also, BTW, if you are considering the US, US universities tend to require that you redo your masters degree as part of their PhD program, which kinda sucks.

ouch, that does sux. They think our masters are not good enough?

Never a good idea to argue with your advisor. I've been completely cooperative with all mine's suggestions. He does also know what he's talking about, I've never found a reason to argue with his points.

No, it was with the examiner, not my supervisor. He sent his report + list of corrections to do before I could officially get my mark (although you get your mark beforehand). You supervisor just has to sign off you made the corrections, or enough corrections to his/her satisfaction/

It's more of an issue with the way it's structured. They consider a PhD to be a 5-year program pretty much ubiquitously, and you get your MS after the first two years. Even if you have an MS from another US university, it's another 5 years again. One benefit is that the staff generally know all their potential PhD students, and can accept them based on a standardized performance measure. Also, I think that if they are going to stamp "PhD" on someone, it also means that there is a guarantee that this person has a broad enough background from their standardized MS coursework.

No...it's common in the US to go from your undergrad --> Ph.D. It's usually 1 or 2 years of Masters-level course-work + 3 years of doing your dissertation. Working 80 hours on your course is not uncommon in top US Ph.D programs (at least in cool subjects like Ecos anyway :p)

Chris and cguy, thanks for clearing that up :)

Sure. Also, both our MSc and PhDs are recognized outside the country (at least everywhere I know of). However, if one is applying for a job in a related field to one's PhD or a post doc overseas, the most important factor is usually how much, where and what you've published. I have one SA publication, all the others are at high profile international conferences/journals. I was not impressed with the local CS publications (and neither are most academics outside the country).
