i saw the thread about the school kids getting stabbed and thought i would ask the following question as its been on my mind awhile now. WHATEVER HAPPENED TO PREFECTS AT SCHOOL. i remember when i was at school i would never step out of line or catch on anything naughty because i was worried that a prefect would see me and report me to the teachers or principal. i know the prefects cannot be everywhere and that nothing happened at school anyway but damn i was not gonna take a chance anyway. DO SCHOOLS STILL HAVE PREFECTS AND WHAT IS THEIR ROLL AT SCHOOL ANYWAY.

schools should make it easier to expel certain pupils.

At the end of the day, expulsions are determined by the Department of Education. It's such a process to expel a learner now that many schools just can't be bothered to go through the process. And once expelled (as far as I know), the school isn't allowed to reject their reapplication, particularly if they meet certain criteria (such as being in the school feeder zone, siblings at the school, that kind of thing).

They have, but like the teachers their authority is also curbed, they nowadays just act as messengers for the lazy teachers IMHO and are used for unpaid labor. Some still try but there is now big bullies at schools in classes with lower graders who failed most of their standards.

In my Cape Town based HS, I remember, when I was there, the worst that could happen to you was a shiner and that was so rare. Once our Rugby team got into afight with a neighbouring school - it was a bit of a scuffle but it was condemned widely. Nowadays you read about people being stabbed, beaten virtually into comas, drug usage frequent etc. The prefects are no Steven Segals - they can't control gang related infiltration into schools.

Ah so it was past the point when you got stationary with NPA written on them? :D

My school just called to say we must collect our kids, some schools in the Gauteng region are being attacked by Low life Low intellect crowds?

Prefects = Apartheid.

Anything that smacked of discipline or order was scrapped.

The rule of the day now is... do as you please.

I blame the ANC.

Wouldn't matter if the schools had the most disciplined and dedicated prefects. The system as a whole is now broken. Discipline in our schools is dead because of the fact that corporal punishment has been done away with and BS like the race card was put in its place.

It floors me that my old highschool is infested with CCTV cameras nowadays. What the hell is that all about? When I went to school, if someone was caught stealing, expulsion was the least of their problems. They'd most certainly be explaining themselves to the cops as well. Same goes for vandalism and the sort of destruction we're seeing in the schools right now.

Where are the consequences for these actions? With no repercussions, nothing is going to improve (or at least stay intact). It really is as simple as that. Ag but "aputt-hate" an' all that, y'know...

Just recieved word from my Niggie she that I need to go with her to Hoërskool die Wilgers to fetch my klein-nig (because I can speak a bit of their language), they are intimidating the school because the teachers refused to strike and put the children 1st. Donderse Barbarre.

Alberton high I went there for a year and dudes were getting there skulls cracked. School is just a prison now. And This fusking kids are out of control. Makes me angry.

I have never known prefects to be anything, but useless when it came to preventing violence.

Completely ineffectual back in the day.

Abolition of corporal punishment is not the problem. It was always the refuge of the lazy and child abusers anyway.

I thought corporal punishment solved everything?
