Hi all, I am looking for a school management system for a school with 500 students with the following functionalities:

- Grading , it should be able to grade using course work and exams
- Financial Management
- Attandance , it should be able to pull records from a Biometric Attendance device - Hikvision DS-K1T804
- Time Table, generate multiple timetables for teachers
- Library Management, catalog and loan resources

Please make recommendations.

Edusol SA-SAMS

Just downloaded this to test, no proper documentation, I get "You no existing database on this computer". Nothing happens when I click "Create New Database".

Welcome to the hell that is SA-SAMS.

Do they still store their records in an MS Access database file?

I have a family member who suggested D6.

PhireSide was joking about SASAMS. It's well-known it's abysmal. Don't use D6. It's the same.

I've heard Engage and My Class Campus are good.

The biometric attendance is quite a thing. Holidays, leave, different employee types and work times. Quite a complex to code. Timetables for the classes is complex too as I think they change quite often.

Phone any one of the big schools and ask them what they use they'll tell you.

I don't mind writing custom software, but I suspect it might cost a little more than what the school could afford?

Still sounds like a fun project especially to interact with the Hikvision control panel.

Afaik those biometric devices house an onboard sqlite database for local storage for when the device is off site or when the network is down. So you interact with the API it provides. Some of the fancier ones can lock a particular person from entering the premises even when offline. How you merge the devices data with say, a corporate database when it is connected I'm not sure. Had one of these to tinker with for a while but they are obviously not all the same.

There is a real market for this if you are looking to get into it as a programmer.

As with all software solutions to complicated problems/domains there can be pain points

D6 is up there as a feasible operational/administration system.
Integrates well with Sticitt too (cashless system)

Engage is a system to manage class/school content/textbooks, not to administer a school.

Building a custom system is a complete no no. It will cost millions, and take ages to build (run from anyone who says “I’ll do it in a couple of months”)

There is no system that will satisfy 100% of your “needs”. Often your “needs” are based in legacy thinking/processing, so to modernize/automate your business you need to adapt.

I agree with most of what you've said except for D6.

This is where user-surveys come in handy for showing the practical use of a program/app. The idea is good. The implementation far from not.

No one I know likes the D6 functionality. And the parents hate it. I know because I'm on the front end of their complaints or their screaming.
D6 is slow. It takes ages to open and that's if it opens the first time round. Or the second. Or the third. For readers it's slow and clunky, and for users who post information it's not as simple as making and correcting a post. And it's slow and clunky for them too.
The user-interface is outdated, bad and annoying, and the overall program slow and buggy.

We're forced to use it. If we had a choice I'm sure we'd go with something different. Something much faster and streamlined. And more user-friendly.

My daughter school tried this. I installed and uninstalled the APP, was not impressed with it. I just stick to the old traditional methods of interacting with the school.

Edit: I still get lots of junk mail from D6 asking me to install.

I know this is a bit late but a new product has just hit the market. It’s called ToGGeL. Revolutionary. Maybe check it out. It ticks all the boxes and are very dynamic.
