I talked the SGB into 40 PC's networked by cable.
Next step was Internet via ADSL.
I have no preference for OS, but at this stage I am as blind as a bat. I need help to crawl to the finish

* you need to subscribe an ADSL line from Telkom (only place, sad, and not availble everywhere in SA)
* subcribe ADSL service, you can get it anywhere in SA
* if your PCs only for internet access, one normal 512K/1MB ADSL account should be ok, if you want to host some services (Web, email or FTP server) yourself, you need a business ADSL account (fixed IP)
* one ADSL modem/Router combo, enable DHCP service on router and config the DHCP range, and setup all PCs to get network parameters (IP/subnet mask/default gateway/DNS) via DHCP
* off to go

Give me a call 0828393223 I'll help you out

i would go with a linux gateway in the middle of it all, u can use it for firewall, mail, proxy services etc etc..... u probably do want to have some control over the kiddies!

If I could also be so rude as to ask where you are from, actually which school and in what area. But thats just because i'm inquisitive. (or bus... any coloureds wanna tell me how to spell that?)
Anyway... our school recently got ADSL for about 60 PC's, now in the first month we were capped in about 10 days, our PC techie is a fruK3n retard so we probably had a 3gig account. You probably will need uncapped and yes IS is the best place for that. Unless usage based can actually suit your needs, if you use less than about 15gigs then a usage based service on 1mb or at least 512 (youre gonna need it) will work out cheaper.
And a whole Linux box to control the kids isn't even that neccesary, a good router can block ip's, p2p protocols, web sites and make logs of whats going on. I'm geussing you dont really have the money for another machine and talking Governing bodies into anything is always a las.

sorry we just kinda speak like that here in cape town.. it's sort of a joke, but then you cant let go of speaking like that.
Fine I'll use the word inquisitive instead, even though I'm not shure how to spell that either

Yes, I agree. A new PC for Linux is bloody expensive compared to a nice embedded router. But really dude, we need more info!
