The Gauteng education department has confirmed that two pupils at a high school in Ekurhuleni have been suspended.

It comes after the teenage boy proposed to his high school sweetheart on the school grounds last week.

However, the provincial education department spokesperson Steve Mabona says the proposal is not the reason for their suspension.

He says the Grade 10 and Grade 11 pupils' proposal was filmed and the footage shared on social media.

Mabona says the children have been suspended for kissing and touching which is in violation of the school's code of conduct.

The school should just marry them. Its more of a punishment....suspension pffffffff.

bohahaha

The school is being a ponce in this instance.

The kids will get away with a slap on the wrist. The school has to take a stand, especially as evidence made its rounds on social media. Maybe it will stop these kids from making a terrible mistake.

I thought 19 and 20 year olds were allowed to get married.

I take it that you didn't read the article, as those aren't the pupils' ages.

I went to an all boys school and didn't see any kissing going on but I have heard about these no touching rules at co-ed schools.

With cellphone cameras these days way racier acts by students are being circulated.

They are.

A bit over your heads.
It was comic sans, and was implying the level education nowadays being so atrocious that 19 and 20 year olds are still at school in those grades.

The sad truth is that iff they are 16 or older they can get married if their parents are happy to sign. For some that is culturally ok.

The marriage act of 1961 set out that girls aged 15 could get married. Guess which culture that comes from?

As it stands no boy under 18 or girl under 15 can get married without ministerial permission.

Girls aged 15 to 18 need parental permission. Anyone over 18 can get married.

The gender age difference could be unconstitutional but hasn't been challenged.

Deplorable as it is, most of the developed world seems to agree on 18 and 16 with parental consent.
