Schools may ban cellphones

While they probably wouldn't search, I hope there's a law passed to enact this. If they're caught with a phone during school hours, it could then be legally confiscated without constituting theft.
 
In a similar thread I had to explain how a cell phone is vital to me organising my lifts home and my day, basically as lives become more hectek the things are needed for a legitimis use

That is exactly what I am for, there is no reason to use a phone in class - but those who are for a complete ban arn't taking things into consideration

Not too sure about the children, but us young adults have much more complex and demanding lives ;)
 
Install jamming devices in the schools that can be turned off and on as the need arises.
Surely the parents would be willing to sponsor this seeing as their kids will reap the benefits of an proper education?
 
kilps I think the ban is for during school class hours (8am - 2pm or whatever it is), after school there's no stopping anybody.

There's no reason to be against it, if you have extra-curricular sports activities they are normally after school anyway, make transport arrangements after the bell rings for home time ;)

Or the jamming device idea could be linked to the bell or something - they could be disabled during breaks and after school.

the problem arises when you discover that you need to be picked up at 9pm instead of the end of school at 3pm (believe me it happens)

but it's a bit pointless arguing this - we both agree that they are a distraction, what is wrong with using them during break?

I know from a friend at Rondebosch that they've already banned cellphones there.

I suppose you do get to the raw end of the deal when you go to a govt. school ;) :D

When I was at school we never had Internet or cellphones, and had to get our porn the old-fashioned way, i.e. magazines, videos etc. (even playing cards, heh). Believe me we all got it easily enough though. The point being: Your kids are getting porn anyway. Just get over it, it isn't harming them.

Taking away the cellphones isn't going to stop them getting porn --- it's just going to make it much harder for them to call for help when they're in an emergency situation. And for that reason, if I had kids I would most definitely prefer for them to keep the cellphone with them. (That, and I don't want them to get too used to the idea of police-state-style authoritarian systems.)

Banning cellphones at schools is stupid. Sure, pass rules against using them during exams or talking on them during class etc.. But that's an internal matter, at the school, and having the government pass a law would be incredibly stupid and a waste of taxpayer money. There is nothing inherently bad about a cellphone, and there is nothing bad you can do with a cellphone that you can't do in other ways too (e.g. bullying is hardly a new problem is it? ... taking away cellphones won't prevent it either).

You people calling for a law are just scary. I thought we learnt some lessons from the old days ... or are we all just used to that kind of system? Or want a nanny-state to protect our children? And do you really think cellphones actually pose any danger whatsoever to your children?

My school had a governing body hearing and the following was put into place.

Phone may be used before school and during breaks. Not durint teaching time.

1st offence
- Phone is taken away for 3 months, end of story
2nd Offence
- Phone is taken away for 6 months, or R300 payment after 3 Months.

This is now part of the Western Cape Education Department laws, but so far nobody cares, not even the staff of our school.

I however use my phone as a timetable and my diary, and my teachers know that so, its all good.
Good to have Excel and nice Schedule suite on 6680

Really, are you shure? I know a guy at Rondebosh too, never heard of this, but then again he did get mugged on the way home a while ago and had nothign on him, so I guess they dont take cellphones too school.

But then again.. ive also seen a home made pr0n vid on his cellphone that was given to him by someone at school...

So i guess the kids just break the rules anyway.

But ive personally never taken my phone to school, and dont need to either, everyone in all my classes are always playing music or going on Mxit. Damn mxit is pathetic, so many people love it, but like actualyl love it. they write stuff about how great mxit is on our desks. Its a fuking application.. damn morons.

And rondebosch is hardly a "government" school, well they are the richest governemt school around at least. I go to a real government school, and we have also just had laws passed, which the teachers do care about unfortuanatley, but they arent as stupid as to take away your cellphone for 3 months, that is a bit dumb dont you think?
Well, not even a week of lessons left for me and im out of school (after those damn exams..) so i dont care at all.

It happens to be a useful hot word that will get many parents to agree to any measure. Any time it is thrown into the mix we should immediately become suspicious.
