So with so many people saying that sci-fi series never live up to the novels why not recommend a few?

It's quite a broad genre, though. What kind are you looking for - space opera (epic/large scale), ideas-focused (philosophical, moral exploration)

I'll mention a few I consider to be very good.

Hyperion (Dan Simmons)
Dune (Frank Herbert)
Revelation Space (Alastair Reynolds)
Ubik (Philip K. Dick)
Starship Troopers (Robert Heinlein)
The Forever War (Joe Haldeman)
The Dispossessed (Ursula K. Le Guin)
The Stars My Destination (Alfred Bester)

There are many, many more naturally.

The Expanse Series would be a good starting point, it moves along at a decent pace..

Also quite enjoyed Retribution Falls (although it is more steam punk than straight Sci-Fi)
