I got tired of waiting for Centos to release v6 and am currently testing Scientific Linux 6.

Other than a problem with the install media (Live CD & Install DVD) which I eventually sussed things seem to be going smoothly.

Comments from anyone with experience of SL would be appreciated.

MickZA, give it a try (there is a live CD) I have it tripple booted and like it very much. As I am not a fan of Unity or Gnome 3, I have been
considering alternatives. SL 6 is one of them. Check out the forum http://scientificlinuxforum.org/

Here a sshot of mine taken recently. http://www.imagebam.com/image/dee522134902520

PS. I see you ARE already testing. Apologies. :)

whether you are not a fan of unity or gnome3, you do realise that doesn't mean you have to change distros?

not saying don't try out other distros. but package issues should hardly be the thing that makes you change in the main.

My reasons for possibly moving to Scientific Linux from CentOS are summed up in this thread http://lists.centos.org/pipermail/centos/2011-May/111613.html

In short I am putting together a small server at the moment and CentOS 5.6 is not happy with the hardware (I3 on a Gigabyte GA-H67MA-D2H-B3) whereas SL-6 seems to do the job.

It's early days yet but I suspect I will be making the move based on my experience so far.

milomak, you will be aware that starting with Ubuntu 11.10 there will no longer be the Gnome 2 fallback option, so one would have to look
for alternatives. Best bet for me would probably be Kubuntu. http://www.dedoimedo.com/computers/kubuntu-natty.html

However I like the idea of rolling releases like SL 6 with support till at least 2016/7. Linux Mint Debian LMDE http://blog.linuxmint.com/?p=1604
based on testing may also be of interest.

Of course Ubuntu(s) package manager rules - no dispute there.

if you want rolling releases why not go to the source? debian in its testing form? or unstable given that is the root for ubuntu?

as to gnome 2, is that to say canonical has turned its back on it? but even then i can't believe that in the ubuntu universe there wont be anyone providing/supporting gnome2.

when kde4 was released for a long time under the different distros you could still find ways to maintain kde3. i wouldn't be surprised if this is still the case.

It's well documented, Gnome 2 is dead as far as Canonical/Shuttleworth is concerned - starting with 11.10.
