The method has limitations, though, as it takes around 24 hours to decode 2MB of data
So around 12 000 000 years to get at all of it?

so let me get this straight..... (not sure how long it take to store the data), but they charged $7000 per 2MB or a measily $770 560 000 000 000 to store the data , then retrieved 2MB to prove the theory...

do i smell a money making scheme here :twisted:

Something doesn't sound right. You store 215PB but can only decode 2MB a day. So it will take 294 million years to decode it all. How do you know the retrieval is perfect?

Seemed dodgy to me too, so I skimmed the linked text. I stand to be corrected, but it seems the researchers
1. encoded 2MB of data into dna,
2. applied a well known mathematical principle to increase the efficiency...
2. ...of an industry standard error correcting code (like a parity bit for checking) they used on the 2mb of dna, whose result they appended to said 2mb.

And they could read back that 2MB, even in the face of degradation of the encoded dna due to the error correcting code used.

Then (over my head here), they copied/duplicated that 2MB to 215PB (whereby, understandably, artifacts arose), and they could still read back that 2MB from a random read.
 
data transfer rate a bit slow there. dna ports need an upgrade :D
 
DNA storage has innovated years ago when scientists were able to store all of Shakespeare's sonnets on a synthetic double helix.
 
Must be female dna, they always bring up schite from the past :p
 
I believe this will be the future, but for now it needs more speed!!!!!
There are far better ways for data storage and there's even work being done to store data in single atoms. The purpose of this is to inject data into a person's dna but not huge amounts of it, only about a MB or so, as there has to be huge amounts of redundancy and error correction.
