Is there a very light weight version of linux I can boot off of, and is RAM based like puppy linux, (doesnt need things like a hard drive and such), that comes with all those distributed computing clients used my research institutions like universities?

Basically, a person just has to pop any machine onto a network, it automaticaly picks up dhcp and gets to work.

You can have the option to setup the different projects you want to get involved in like SETI, or cancer research.

Make it so that it displays a really cool screensaver like its doing something real fancy :)

I have a couple of old machines that could use up processor cycles.

Whoa, that's a pretty specific itch you need to scratch. :D

I remember playing with a customisable live cd based on slack a while ago. Basically you go to the website, select the packages and some other options, and it creates an iso for you to download - can't remember the name of the distro. No, wait - here it is. Instalinux also looks interesting.

Or you could roll a customised ubuntu, using xfce. I read an article about that not too long ago - will see if I can find it. Here it is.

Customising ubuntu live cd

Sounds like a fun project. :)
