Did anyone here get certified in Java, if so, I have a few questions for you:)

1.) Apart from studying for the exam, what prior programming experience did you have?

2.) What study materials did you use to ace the exam?

3.) How long did you take to prepare?

4.) Did you get it the first time? (I hear it can be a pain in the ass even for very experienced programmers)

Thats all, thanks in advance

I wrote the SCJP a long time ago (2006) so I am not sure how relevant it is today.

1) I was working as a developer for around a year before writing the certification (I also had my degree at that time but because the certification is so focussed on the Java language I don't know if that made any difference)

2) Sorry, way too long ago for me to remember. I had a book that helped a lot and did a lot of sample questions I found online. I think www.javaranch.com helped a lot

3) I think around a week or two of hard studying

4) Got it the first time

The test isn't hard but you really need to know the content well and practice the type of tricky questions they ask.

I just did both OCAJP and OCPJP :)

I am new to programming, it was difficult but if you are experienced it should be a easy enough for you.

I used the tutorials to learn and read head first java.

now I am starting my BSC correspondence and just writing small apps to learn and practice.

Impressive, what exactly is the difference between OCAJP and OCPJP can't seem to find anything on Oracle's website.

in the past the guys would just write SCJP

now you have to first write OCAJP (Oracle Certified Associate Java Programmer) and then OCPJP (Oracle Certified Professional Java Programmer)

here is the certification path : http://education.oracle.com/pls/web...ge?page_id=458&get_params=p_track_id:JSE7Prog

are you currently a developer?

Yeah just recently started (Only have a Diploma) company pays more if I get Java certified, they just told me to do the OCJP for java 6

Yeah thats the one I also saw, haha this thread only leads me to more questions, so now whats the difference between the 2 you did and the OCJP 6? Basically two for java 7 and one for 6:confused:

Okay digging around a bit on Coderanch it would appear that OCJP 6 is still the best one to go for, apparently its more widely recognized and also covers more advanced topics.

Well a lot of guys do the OCJP 6 and then do the upgrade exam to get the 7. I actually heard the opposite that the OCJP6 is easier and that the OCAJP and OCPJP is more thorough and obviously being up to date (i.e including existing plus new functionality) it would be better.

the reason for 2 exams is the first really tests your fundamental knowledge where the 2nd tests your use of the API etc.

but look I am by no means an expert so really I only answer on what I have read up on, perhaps compare the topics covered by the 2 and see what you feel is better? I am sure the topics should be similar if not the same (obviously with just the new added changes)
