I am considering getting a scooter for the 8km commute I do to work that often takes over 45 minutes in the traffic. I can easily run faster than that!! I am looking at options would appreciate any input.

On one hand there are the Jonway / Bigboy Chinese brands. They go for around R13000 new. I have also seen that the Suzuki AN125 is R13500 new and that looks like a much better deal than the Chinese models - I am assuming that it is better quality. I would rather spend a bit more for something decent. Also considering a second hand Honda PCX150 if I can find one in decent condition.

ditch the scooter and get a 125 KTM Duke!

Commuting by bike saves you time and money. some small bikes / scooters do 50km/l .

If you're going to go the scoot route look at Honda or Kymco really. Stay away from the Chinese brands.

Or like Iain recommended, get a small bike. Just a word of caution on the KTM Dukes (125, 200 and 390) they run incredibly hot. They're designed for street fighting, i.e., tight spaces in town and what not, but they can't really perform because the cooling system is inadequate for the heat the engine (particularly on the 390) produces.

Honda CBX250 twister is also a nice cheap, run around bike.

Xennox, my 690 runs a little hot if not moving...

that cbx250 is also a nice scoot. reliable and bomb proof.

My 390 overheats like crazy. I'm taking her back to the dealer this Saturday and going to ask them to fix the problem. I'm thinking either the fan is shot, or the water pump is borked.

How big is your tank and what sort of mileage do you get? I get about 280 kms out of 11 litres, some times more if i really try. kms that is.

Tank is 11 litres. Depending how I ride and what the traffic conditions are like I get anywhere between 24 km/l to 29 km/l. If the traffic flows at 80 km/l, then I'll get 29 km/l if not greater. My average range on my tank when I fill up is 235 km. It's usually 8.5 to 8.7 litres that I fill up with (to the edge of the funnel, nothing above that edge).

So if I extrapolate, that would mean I have about 2.5 litres left, which should get me another 65 km. So total about 300 km per tank.
