Good day Everyone

I hope someone can assist and send us in the right direction...

4 years back my parents helped us to buy a Scooter for my wife. We didn't have insurance at the time etc. My mother registered the Scooter in her name etc, as well as got it insured on their insurance, making my wife the regular driver etc.

In the meantime, they moved down to KZN(We are in MP, the scooter is registered in MP), and we bought a car for my wife. Now we would like to sell the Scooter... This is where the nightmare starts.

We cant find the original registration papers of the scooter. My parents looked everywhere to no avail.

What can I do to get a duplicate?
Whats the best route to take?

When we were down at the coast now 2 weeks ago, I got a letter drawn up by my mother giving me permission to get a duplicate of the registration papers at the licence department, and a copy of her ID document and got it all certified. Also she signed the document for the licence department that you complete when applying for the duplicate.

You should have the scooter de-registered. Would be a lot easier.

Thanks for the reply ChrisThomas.

Ok, after that when we sell it, the new buyer should then re-register it? Do you know maybe what the cost is to have a Motorcycle Re-registered?

They want to sell it , not scrap it.

You have the letters, go to the traffic/licensing dept and request the new papers.

DO NOT deregister it. It kicks the resale value in the arse.

Pay the licence outstanding as well. I merely assume that if you/parents were as loskop not to keep the title safe, you/them probably have not been renewing the licence either.

Only if this is the case and the backpay and fines for late payment exceeds the value of the vehicle do you scrap it and sell it for spare parts.

Fortunately we have renewed the licence each and every year. We are VERY strict with this...no licence no drive, on the vehicle and driver :)

You see, with the move some boxes went missing. And my parents say they could swear they gave it to us, and quite frankly we cannot remember if we received it or not.

The licence is valid till 2017 March. So I'm thinking if we cannot find it in the next month, I will have to sell the scooter with a contract where I state that I will sort out the papers as soon as my parents come down this year "some time", and that the buyer will be responsible for any fines while in his possession.

...but then I'm thinking it will be an insurance nightmare for the buyer, should he/she choose to get it insured.

Take the letter and copy of your mom's ID to the licensing department and fill out the form requesting a copy of the registration papers. Pay them the fee, and they will ask you to come back in a few weeks once the copy has been issued. Not complicated at all, you're hardly the first person to lose the papers.

That^^^

Although there was another poster looking for the same thing and a reply seemed to indicate that the owner(your mom in this case) has to personally go in to do this.

I had to get reg papers for my scooter which I sold a couple months ago. Filled out the relevant form, paid the fee and had the new papers five minutes later.

My local licensing department has a big notice up stating that all applications for duplicate registration document have to be done in person by the registered owner. No doubt because of fraud.

I did it a couple of years ago, on behalf of a friend (the guy I bought the car from), and it took a couple of weeks, but they allowed it. Maybe they've tightened up the rules since then.

It's even less schlep if his mom has to do it :)

Good...no Great news.

My wife went through our (What she calls it...) "Memory Box", thats full of cards etc.

Inbetween all the stuff she found the Registration papers. Seems like someone  not saying it was her(keeping the peace), took a bunch of papers we put together to sort, and chucked it in the box.

One less stress for us this week...now just to sell it.
