Scooters

I'd stay far away from a scooter. My son got plowed down on one last year on Witkoppen road. I would also get a bigger 125cc imho. It's just a bit more visible.

Your concern is noted - believe me. I think that any form of bike is at a huge disadvantage and the smaller the bike the greater that disadvantage. Scooters have it worse in that the wheels are so small making them even less stable.

But I also believe that the driver can have a lot to do with his or her own safety. It's never going to be the same as a car just because the structure of a car adds protection that a bike just doesn't have. But I can choose where to drive, when to drive, how to drive and also sit out the weather. I think that a scooter forces those choices on you more than a 'normal' bike does.

I used to ride a 750 when I was young and stupid. That meant doing at least 10kph more than the other traffic. I've been lucky in being able to deal with ruts in the road, rain on stop signs painted on the road and those sorts of things. But not when a 'tard went through an intersection. But then I've been rear ended, side swiped and T-boned in cars.

Yes, bikes, especially scooters, are dangerous. But the fuel they use makes them soooo attractive.

I hope your son is okay.

Trust me, get her this: http://www.honda.co.za/en/products/motorcycles/dual-purpose/xr125l/#/model-overview/features/

In every single way its better than a scooter. Safer, uses less fuel (no cvt red lining all the time), easier to ride, better resale, faster, better braking, better grip, better passenger carrying, better visibility (from the rider and other motorists perspective), more fun, more usable, less stupid, cheaper in the long term. And a girl on a bike? Thats just bad ass. A girl on a scooter? Death waiting to happen.

Good points - any idea on price?

Wait, just under R16000. I'll go look

I got the MotoMia Java - R10999
http://www.motomia.com/java170s.php

Done about 2100km on It so far.

I gave it a test drive. Was fun but my hands smelled funny afterwards. The mirrors were a little bit of a problem - they picked up a lot of vibration.

I then had my brother point out that scooters are motorbikes for men who like to feel the wind on their vaginas.

Should be able to find a mint one for 10K, as the price for a new one just recently went up a few grand due to the rand dollar.

I had a Honda E storm, and sold it for the same price I bought it 10 000km later.

These days the 125cc/150cc scooters are the same size. A bigger motorcycle wouldn't make you more visible. Just look at motorcars, they are big lumpy things and they still manage to drive into one another.

If you want to be visible then always ride with your headlight on (required by law) , and get one of those amber headlight filters. A nice high visibility jacket will also help make you more visible.

Secondly don't ride like someone who's asleep, keep your eyes open. You should always be aware of what's going on around you, or you will be killed.

I'm selling my daughters scooter.

Unregistered 2012 Big Boy Pulse 150cc, orange with less than 3 000km.
