Win XP, Dell D620 laptop ...

Screen started flickering this morning. It flickered for a few minutes and eventually went very dark (not off but very very dark).

I booted into safe mode and re-installed the video driver. Seems to have resolved the issue.

Problem is it was flickering even during the boot sequence (on the BIOS page etc) so I would think the graphics driver isn't even loaded at that point? Also when I moved the screen (open and close laptop) it seems to get better and then worse.

Now it's totally fine again.

Under Device manager though there are 2 Display adapters. "Mobile Intel(R) 945GM Express Chipset Family" is repeated twice. I've removed both and re-installed once both it appears twice in the list after the re-install.

Ideas?

If it isn't burning your ass at the moment I would not worry about it too much. If you really want it gone, make sure any display software have been removed via Add/Remove Software too. I'd even boot into Safe Mode and try and clear it from there.

Thinking on it now. I think this is a result of dual monitor settings. Well, at least it might be. It can cause flickering during boot. Have you hooked up another monitor to the notebook? If the machine is working fine I would not bother about it, but if this was not caused by dual screen or tv out efforts, try them anyway to see if this doesn't force the computer to update its configuration settings.

Two screens showing up is one thing, but two display adapters are a bit funny. The one is definitely a ghost in the settings. For good measure SOMMER change the BIOS to optimal or fail safe and back again (after a boot into windows of course) to see if it doesn't shake things loose.

There are supposed to be 2 adapters, 1 for the LCD and 1 for external.

I have a X1950XT with 2 DVI ports and it shows 2 display card, as does my D820.

Thanks for the replies.

I've now find that if I press on the hinge just where it connects the screen the PC I can get the flicker to stop and start. Must be a faulty connector. Is this what you mean by the invertor?

Yeah, just call 011 709 7700 and they will come out and repair.

My D620 also has the two 945GM's in device manager.
Its definately the connection to the LCD that is causing the hassles.

FYI The dual display adapters are on every Dell laptop I deal with daily. So it must be normal :p definately for the dual monitor support.

Mr.Dell visited me yesterday. Opened up laptop. Cable from mobo to screen inside hinge was graunched. He replaced cable and screen. Happy days.
