Ok so just a brainstorming session... when i play games(intermittently) often my screen will go completely greyish and have vertical lines running down it while my PC makes a hanging sound (cant ctrl + alt + del) alternatively my monitor will just go completely blank... first thing that comes to mind is heating issue so i checked that and cpu system and GPU temps seem to be fine... Next thing i tried is driver updates still didnt help

any ideas ?

Try running a prime95 and super pi, to check the system temps are still fine at load. Also maybe try running a memtest?

GPU overheating would be my first suggestion if you're seeing lines (CPU overheating would restarting the PC)...

Are you getting any artefacts (different coloured pixels) in the boot screen/in your OS?

Power supply failing,GPU memory/core overheating,cpu/chipset overheating

It would really help if you posted more info
CPU model, idle temp and load temp, and if OC'd speed and voltages as well
GPU same as CPU
PSU model and age
Can go from there

Ok so it can pretty much be anything

I have E8500 if im not mistaken its idle temp is roughly 45 degrees (not overclocked)
My GPU is HD4850 and runs at an idle of 44 degrees(also nto overclocked)
PSU not sure what model it is but i think it is a cheap brand and is about 3 years old

my next step is going to be to try run memtest and see if that returns any results i will keep you updated

Thanks

Had the same problem and it was my GPU overheating - clearing out all the gunk from the cooling fans fixed that.
If you've recently added another hard-drive/component disconnect it to see if the drain on your PSU isn't too much.

OK so here is what i have found so far i did a memory test that passed fine i tried to unplug all uneeded peripherals and it still had the same problem i installed he latest catalyst drivers.

2 weird things though when i open catalyst manager my GPU temp is cool but it shows activity and fan speeds at 0 even though the fan is spinning is that normal ? another thing is i installed everest and when i do a report i get this error :

I dont know if that helps anyone at all ? because it doesnt help me much :(

Try running Video Memory Stress Test (can be found at MajorGeeks.com).

That debug info that you gave of everest doesn't mean much, since it's just a memory dump of printable characters.

insanity my 4850 did that, perfectly spaced vertical lines. i fear you have the "power play" bug or whatever it's called. i couldn't fix it with software or bios and in the end i tossed it away and got another GPU.

:edit
ati 4850 revisted... powerplay or bios bugs

Yeah that is exactly the same error i have but i took my card out and looked at it carefully and my caps on it look borked so i am thinking that could be the problem anyone know what the warranty on those cards were ?

Insanity, if your card is still under warranty, then you should definitely RMA it!

if not under warrantee then you could get the caps replaced. Would cost less than a new card.

Yeah im gonna try get the caps replaced at lunch and hopefully that solves the problem if not you will see a thread comign up soon about which cheapish gcard i should go for !
