I'm not sure what to search for to fix this.

The Windows Taskbar on my deskptop is covering applications that run. For example in FF and IE I cant see the status bar at the bottom.

I've played around with the auto-hide settings but this doesn't help. It's as if the screen is not resizing to fit the taskbar. I've tried moving it to the side and it also doesn't re-size.

See how the taskbar is over FF ... ??? How to fix?

Thanks.

I might be missing the root of your problem here, but ... can't you just 'right click' on the task bar, and ensure the "Lock the Taskbar" is not ticked? The task bar will then hide itself when the cursor is not in the task bar area

You can do one of two things...

1) Auto-hide the task bar. It will hide when the mouse is nowhere near.
2) Uncheck the box that says "keep the task bar on top of other applications"

Thanks Folks. Tried both options, nothing worked.

Have you tried all this?

By default, the Windows Taskbar is always located along the bottom of the computer screen. However, you can easily relocate the taskbar to the top or either side of the computer screen if you would like to try something different.

Moving the Windows taskbar is quite straightforward. However, it does require reasonably precise mouse handling. If you are new to computing and still developing your mouse-skills, coaxing the taskbar to move where you want it might seem a little difficult. If you are not yet confident with fiddly mouse manipulation, I would suggest that you postpone using this tip until you gain more mousing experience.

Here's how to relocate the Windows XP Taskbar:

The taskbar needs to be "unlocked" before you can move it. To check, right-click the taskbar and ensure that "Lock the Taskbar" is not ticked. If there is a tick, click "Lock the Taskbar" to untick it.

If necessary, close one or more running programs to free up some open space on the taskbar. Click an open area of the taskbar and hold down the mouse button.Be sure to click and hold near the centre of the taskbar. Clicking and dragging near the edge of the taskbar may simply widen it without moving it. The cursor should not turn into a double-headed arrow. If it does, you need to move the mouse cursor closer to the centre of the taskbar before dragging.

With the mouse button still pressed, drag the taskbar to the top or side of the screen.

Release the mouse button and the taskbar will remain docked to the chosen position.
