Is there an app that does this for non-rooted devices?

For those unfamiliar, it switches your device's screen off when connected to an external display.

Why not switch it off yourself, i.e. power switch? I doubt anything malicious will occur. Alternatively, did you go to the Daydream setting under Display settings? Are you sure you posted in the correct forum?

Because if I switch it off, it will switch off the screen in the external display too.

I'm in android 4.0.4, don't have daydream setting.

I don't think I was clear enough. What I'm doing is connecting my tablet to the TV. So I don't want the tablet screen to be on but if I switch it off, it will switch off on the TV too.

What about if you dim the tablet's screen manually?

That's what I'm doing (lowest brightness setting) but I'd prefer to have it off completely if possible since even on lowest brightness it's still the largest battery user.
