Screen Tearing

Hey everyone!

Does anyone want to help me figure out why I have screen tearing? lol

I have turned on V-sync in the game, in nvidia control panel, tried fast sync, adaptive, capping fps to 2 frames below monitor hz, nothing works lol. weird coz I never had it and after some random update it started happening.

The game is warzone (Or the only game I care about the screen tearing right now)

I5 8600k Stock
GTX 1080
16GB RAM
Z370 KRAIT gaming mobo

Old Samsung 1080p 60hz monitor (no gsync)

With regards to screen tearing I would turn off the vsync
 
Tried vsync off, still got tearing. Forgot to add, im on an ooooooooooooold Samsung 1080p 60hz monitor so no gsync available.
Your monitor shouldn't be the cause.
Not all monitors need to be gsync compatible to play games.

Download the latest Nvidia driver for your card and do a clean install. Scratch. Just start the installer and choose clean install.

Test games without tweaking first.
Usually, default would work best.

I have the same issue with my GTX960 and a 1080p Monitor.

Basically what worked for me was:

To force V-Sync on in the NVidia Control Panel for the specific game and turn V-Sync off in the game. Or vice versa, leaving V-Sync on "Application Controlled" in the NVidia Control Panel, and only turning V-Sync on in the game itself.

It's usually forcing V-Sync in the control panel, and also enabling it in the game at the same time that causes tearing or stuttering.

So yeah my next thought was to use something like display driver Uninstaller then do a clean install since my drivers are up to date, was just hoping someone could be my saving grace before that lol

I'm sure i gave this combo a try already but tomorrow i will give it another go and report back, thanks :)

Don't use driver uninstallers or third party trash.

Just download the Nvidia driver for the card. Start the setup and choose to do a clean install.

Change nothing in Nvidia Control Panel and test first.

Then set Vsync on. Test.Adaptive.Test.Half.Test.

Disable vsync in game, Nvidia application controlled, and set an FPS limit in the Nvidia control panel.

Note it got introduced some time in the beginning of this year I think.

I currently set it to 62 limit global and then adjust per game to ~160 cap for my G-sync monitor as I prefer quieter fans for certain games.

V-sync isn't great, it has a noticeable (or at least to me) impact on input latency, older studies here: https://www.cse.wustl.edu/~jain/cse567-15/ftp/vsync/index.html
FPS limits are a lot better, and it's even better to enable it in-game if the game supports it.

Install MSI AfterBurner, open up RTS Statistics Server, set your max FPS to 61 FPS.

For example, my hz = 144 and I set my FPS to 145 otherwise I feel a bit of mouse lag :)

That's available in the Nvidia control panel, rather just use it there than install extra software fro it.

Yeah, in my case I dont like the extra bloat GPU drivers come with these days, so I just install the driver and then MSI Afterburner for the rest, I have also found that sometimes the GPU driver Software (in my case AMD) the FPS limiter don't work well on other render APIs like OpenGL / Vulkan, only on D3D.

It works perfectly fine in OpenGL and Vulkan titles, was using it for Talos principle recently.
The Nvidia control panel you'll have installed either way, or at least you should, I'm not talking about GeForce Experience, I never install that.

Afterburner is most likely using the exact same setting that the Nvidia control panel is changing, since frame cap is going to be at driver level.
 
Yeah maybe its an AMD thing then, coz I have in the past use the AMD Chill Feature which caps FPS, but it wouldnt cap them on the other APIs like I said, maybe it has been fixed in more recent versions, but for now I am happy as MSI Afterburner is much lighter than AMD's Bloat and it works better for me, think Nvidia's control panel may be better :)

So for now, it seems like disabling in game fps cap and vsync, and forcing through nvidia control panel (vsync on with 58fps cap, later tonight I will try it with a couple frames higher than my monitor) has sorted out the issue for now, touch wood lol. Not sure why but this was the only combination I didn't try, silly me.

Cant see if you reinstalled GPU drivers from scratch, thats where i would start.

Most people use Display Driver Uninstaller (DDU).
