My other PC keeps reporting an svchost.exe error, at least once every two days. This error causes the PC to lose its Internet connection (even though Internet connection "two computers icon" is still in the task bar), and causes it to lose all LAN functionality (can't VNC in or connect to it from here etc.).

I have reinstalled drivers plenty of times, reinstalled OS etc. to no avail. It's an old AMD Duron on a VIA KM400 motherboard.

Would a new network card possibly sort out the problem?

TIA. :)

What service pack is it running? I would guess XP SP2/3?

I'm not all that sure, but I've noticed that there were many old automated attacks against Windows hosts, using port 135. Usually some old worm that tried to attack svchost. I installed Comodo firewall on our old family pc that had dial up, and the attacks got blocked.

How is the adsl connected? Bridge mode or router directly?

XP SP2.

Connected in bridge mode.

It could so many things. I'm not sure IIRC, but someone mentioned something like this in another thread recently, in which the solution was to change the virtual memory setting to "System managed size". My Computer - Properties -> Advanced -> Performance tab settings -> Advanced tab. You can change it there. I don't know if that would work and if am recalling correctly.

Not so sure this'll help, but worst comes to worst I'll give it a try.

I found this: http://www.harid.web.id/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=75&Itemid=26.

Going to try the Winsocks fixer, seeing as the XP is newer than when the two XP updates they recommend as a fix were released.

Hmm, some of what they are saying reminds me of a case I had once at my old job. @ computers suddenly just couldn't connect to the network, though they had been fine before. One network drive was still working though which was bizarre. An ipconfig /all showed some very strange garbled text. After some research, I got a program called LSPFix and used that.

Turned out that removing new.net or whatever it was called caused it to break the TCP/IP stack, stupid piece of adware.

Since the connection is in bridge mode, are you using any firewalls on the computer itself? The router's firewall is now not being used because it's bridge mode.
