Recently I got a new motherboard and I tried to plug my SD-card reader into the USB connector on my mobo. When I turned on the PC, it smelled like something was burning up. Yes, it was indeed the card reader.

Am I plugging it into the wrong port or something?

Well you can't really plug it in the wrong place...
Not sure how the voltage on your usb port would be messed up tho, cos they generally pretty low voltage.

Can you tell if it's burning on your PC's usb slot? Or on the cards... Could be that your card reader's slot is dodgy. Hope it's not your machine...

Either over voltage or a polarity mismatch, unlikely that it would have been over voltage as the onboard regulators should not allow that to occur.
If the connector of the SD card reader has individual wires a polarity mismatch is very likely.
Failing all of the above it could also have been a good old short circuit...

Definitely on the card reader's side. I could clearly smell it when I came close to my front panel.

Yeah must be as SlayerZA said... The reader's wiring must be out of whack. Suggest you buy a new one cos it can damage your PC's USB slot

Thus it is most likely a short circuit. This could be caused be several things from physical damage during the installation process to a IC simply giving up the magic smoke.

Eish. Guess I'll just have to be without an SD Card reader for a while. Not really in the mood to fry my USB ports just yet.:p
