I searched the forum an didn't really find what I was looking for.

Tomorrow i'm going to go buy that HD-PVR that's on special at game.

I already have a SD-PVR with extra-view et'c the whole package.

What are the extra components and/or modifications I need to make in order to be able to capture HD streams?

Firstly if you just have a SDPVR then you dont have Xtraview, you have dual view

Buy a 2x6 multiswitch from somewhere like Space TV, and 7 short F type co-axial cables with connectors
Connect the 2 lines coming from your dish to the multiswitch inputs
Connect 4 outputs from the multiswitch to the HDPVR
Connect 2 outputs from the multiswitch to the SDPVR
Connect a cable between the 2 decoders RF ports so they can communicate with each other (heartbeat cable)

Call the call centre & get them to activate the HDPVR & Xtraview

You do have other options like having the 2 decoders in separate places but this is the easiest to explain

is it necessary that I connect the 2 decoders with each other?

Also, what should I expect to pay for the components?

If you don't want to pay 2 subscription charges then you need to connect them together. If you do connect your sd pvr to the hd pvr (called xtraview) then you may also need to swap your sd pvr smart card at a multichoice agent/branch to one that supports xtraview.

You really need to go here and download the xtraview technical manual. It should tell you everything you need to know for the different types of installs you can do:

ellies sd pvr to hd pvr kit at makro costs about R500, you can get it online cheaper as well (http://www.zaktronics.co.za/), but the kit at makro as the cables already cut with the ftype conectors ready and its a lot easier :) and faster to install
you dont have to connect the 2 decoders but the you will only be able to watch 1 chanel and record 2(using your new hd pvr) at once and no acess to dstv on demand. if you connect the 2 you get to watch 3 chanels and record 3 at once and still have acess to dstv on demand. either way you pay the same subscription so you might s well conect the 2

Smurfatefrog, what's the difference between Dual View and XtraView? - Is one where you have one decoder, but can watch two channels independently and the other system is what?

Thanks in advance for the clarification. :)

dual view 1 decoder 2 viewing chanels works on old dual view decoder or sd pvr only
extra view 2 decoders 2 viewing chanles works with 1110, 1132 and hd pvr in any combination of no more then 2 decoderes also you can conect hdpvr to old sd pvr that will give you 3 viewing chanles
