Got my Sony Ericsson W995 today. Currently flattening the battery before it's first charge. I am unsure of how long to charge it for. The guy at the vodashop said 2.5 hours but I have a friend who has the same phone and he said he charged it for 16 hours and his battery now lasts up to 3 days.

Any ideas on how long I should charge it for?

First charge is a myth these days, Lithium batteries dont need to be charged for so long, but if you dont mind you can charge it for 16 hours, I didnt and I still get about 3 - 4 days...
it only takes 2 hours to charge the battery full.

On some of the newer phones, as soon as the battery is full a message pops up telling you to remove the charger to save electricity. Generally you should charge it until it's full. I personally charge all my new phones overnight, so that's about 8 hours.

Ergh.

So flattened the battery completely and then charged it for 2.5 hours. I'll listen to 2 or 3 songs and the battery will go down by 4% :/

I get at least three days battery life out of mine and I never charged it for a long time. When using Wi-Fi it the battery goes quicker.

I also bought a W995 from Vodacom. I switched it on and used it until the battery was dead, then charged it for about 3 hours (first charge). I'm using it for a week now and everything is perfect, and the battery life is excellent.
