Seacom DNS

I use fibre by A360 but it's Seacom backbone.

The DNS servers are 41.87.126.254 and 41.87.127.254. They are located in Mauritius.

How do they compare to Google DNS? Google DNS give 4ms latency but the seacom DNS give 45ms or so but how good are they compared to Google DNS and what does it mean when you take in consideration stuff like google local youtube servers.

Well, try using the google DNS and see if it makes a difference. Just set your DNS to 8.8.8.8 then do a tracert to both a local website and an international one. Compare that with a tracert done on the auto configured DNS.

Your ISP should be set to peer anyway. So it shouldn't make much of a difference, especially for local domains.

How do you know they are in Mauritius? It's strange to think they would put their DNS servers their...

Also, I get higher pings to CPT than to their DNS servers:

This is on a SEACOM 50mbit FTTB connection, 4ms to their DNS, connecting to Teraco Durban where SEACOM have their POP.

With that latency it would be in KZN:

The other IP doesnt even reply.

You should ALWAYS use the DNS provided by your ISP (so long as it isnt having any issues), using Googles bypasses most local caches.

Ask Seacom for their JHB DNS servers if you are in JHB.

Must have had things wrong did a whois and it showed it was in Mauritius and when I did a ping to it last night it was 45 to 50ms from Centurion so I automatically assumed it was there.

Think there might have been an issue last night because today the latency to the Durban DNS server is 10 -11ms

Just tested again and it's starting to pick up to 15ms for me now.

Seacom is incorporated in Mauritius, and its entire IP space therefore shows up as such. I find still better response from Google DNS than their local DNS servers.
