That's not the problem. This was never a problem at these pathetic 1Mb/4Mb/7.2Mb speeds - SAT-3 capacity was upgraded with the flip of the switch and SEACOM was added - but these are hardly used as is, the problem is the lack of internal inter-connectivity and the insistence that Telkom get a big cut for these interconnects. Internation b/w price is only 15% of the total, the rest is local nonsense.
 
Before Seacom went live, all we heard was: "Prices will come down drastically". And now? Well, only Afrihost was brave enough to do something about it.
 
yes, there are nice fibre channels here but PeterCh is right, SA has loads of bandwidth so thats not the issue. broadband penetration is still terrible so there aren't too many users. and with 3gig caps we're hardly denting the bandwidth here are we.

It is the interconnects. In bulgaria anyone can open up and ISP and lay cable everywhere, there is no real regulation in place to prevent that. granted it does mean a **** load of network cables hanging off the sides of buildings and flying across the streets from building to building, looks a bit ugly, but i'd take that over **** internet anyday...

in fact until that recent amendment in the communications bill a couple of years ago any form of wireless communication across private property lines was only allowed via Telkom (when they got rid of all the "illegal" WISPs a while back). So technically shouting to your neighbor across the fence was illegal since its a form of wireless communication over property borders.

as much as i dislike telkom they are not to blame, they are merely doing what any other corporation would do in that position (look at Microsoft): milk it for all its worth. Companies exist to make money. Its the job of the government to protect its citizens from harmful business practices where regular market forces are failing. Another decent example of this is the current economic crisis, where the money lenders basically bankrupted the system without any checks in place.
