Seacom traffic down?

Check the following email from Andrew Alston:
Hi All,

There is currently a fiber break between Mtunzini and Umhlanga on the SEACOM
Backhaul from the Landing Station.

This is causing a complete outage of all international traffic.

The fault has been reported to DFA and Fiber technicians are attending to
the fault.

As soon as we have an estimated time to repair or any further updates we
will send out an update.

Many Thanks

Andrew Alston

Clearly you haven't read your Emails :)

Beste Student,

Die internet sal nie beskikbaar wees op Maandag, 1 Februarie 2010, vanaf 07h30-08h00 nie.
Dit word genoodsaak deur die opgradering van die internet bandwydte.

Groete

=============

Dear Student,

The internet will not be available on Monday, 1 February 2010, from 07h30-08h00.
This is necessitated by the increase in the internet bandwidth.

IT User Support Services

Of course you can reckon that this would take much longer than they anticipated for.

Pada! Wow didn't even know you were still at Stellenbosch :D Saw that email but I think this is a seperate case. International was working great up until 9:40 AM then it died :(

Did TENET not build in some redundancy in their network?

There is redundancy in the local SANReN network but no redundancy in the international connectivity. If the link to Mtunzini dies, then international dies.

Why is there no news article or official report from Seacom??? surely this is affecting a lot of people including some really big businesses!!!!

I need my Seacom bandies :(

They didn't even bother to send us an e-mail through the campus internal e-mail system that it's down/why.

Hi all,

DFA have advised us that due to the extensive nature of the repair work
required, the ETA to repair is approximately 45 minutes.

Will continue to update as we have more information.

I got a similar email:

Dear UCT staff and students,

A maintenance slot is required in order to upgrade the UCT Internet bandwidth.

Date: Tuesday 2 February
Time: 17h00 to 18h00 (1 hour)

Reason: Upgrading the UCT internet bandwidth to 500Mbps backbone and 280Mbps international.

Impact: For the duration of the maintenance slot, there will be no internet access and no external mail will be received or delivered. Mail will be queued and processed after the maintenance is complete.

Regards,
ICTS Communications
