Hey guys quick question, can the hard drive In this unit be taken out?
I want to copy 1.8TB and over usb its too slow so I wanna take the drive and put it into my desktop- can it be done safely?

I've opened a lesser freeagent. On that model it required permanent damage to the casing to get it out.

I'd recommend leaving it in & live w/ the speed.

USB 2.0 is dated. eSATA or USB 3.0 (if you have the ports) is what what you need...

I thought Seagate included eSATA?

USB 2.0 for anything more than 250GB is going to cause massive frustration.

I also just about to comment on the warranty. The Seagate FreeAgent has a 5 year warranty. Don't open it. Rather purchase another drive & and an external casing.

If you take it out you void the warranty.

Yup... warranty VOID if any sign of even an attempt to open it. I learned this. The drives inside are all listed by Seagate as having no warranty if the casing is tampered with... all have OEM status and serial numbers are linked to casing.

* sigh *

Thanks to the 7200.11 fiasco, I had 3 that I eventually tossed... BEFORE I found out about the Nokia work-around. I still have one more that has gone to sleep... the casing I cracked open and it too will not be replaced once I get the data off... those casings are designed to break I am sure! if tampered with.

* sigh *

We live and we learn.

just leave it to copy overnight man....or....overweek.
